Permanent Director of the Taihu Culture Forum, Deputy Secretary General of the Association of Calligraphers of Central State Bodies, director of the Association of Chinese Collectors and dean of the Chinese Academy of Painting and Calligraphy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-eeada382-f0e1-4d70-99f6-24e68b2eabf7\">Chen Shibin&#8217;s works show a good understanding and of the Chinese artistic tradition. Despite some innovations, it should be noted that in the Chen Shibin work\u2019s it is not the innovation that attracts viewers with its weirdness, but wise development of Chinese tradition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-bef9805c-3436-45ed-8452-4f24b7ff4e15\">Chen Shibin has a conservative approach to Chinese art. His works can be classified as classical calligraphy. Chen\u2019s calligraphy is easy to read, even for foreign recipients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-6eed18ea-b869-48dd-a172-0606eb436740\"><strong>Poet:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-rounded\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/instytutpolski.pl\/beijing\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2021\/07\/Wislawa_Szymborska.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4368\" width=\"256\" height=\"256\" srcset=\"https:\/\/instytutpolski.pl\/beijing\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2021\/07\/Wislawa_Szymborska.jpg 359w, https:\/\/instytutpolski.pl\/beijing\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2021\/07\/Wislawa_Szymborska-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/instytutpolski.pl\/beijing\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2021\/07\/Wislawa_Szymborska-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 256px) 100vw, 256px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Wis\u0142awa Szymborska<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-3315462a-07e1-494e-9ef9-4984ce06b361\">Poet and essayist, awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1996. Born on the 2nd of July 1923 in Bnin near Pozna\u0144 (according to her birth certificate, though family lore names K\u00f3rnik, the adjacent town). Prominent citizen of Krak\u00f3w, she died there on the 1st of February 2012.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-3ec2bb0a-275b-4607-b3a7-b69bc52f7fcf\">Szymborska\u2019s poetical output, though modest in quantity \u2013 about 350 published poems, from her volume&nbsp;<strong>Calling Out to Yeti<\/strong>&nbsp;(1957) to the posthumously released&nbsp;<strong>Enough<\/strong>&nbsp;(2012) \u2013 was always highly regarded by critics and readers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-6876dcef-cefb-4bc8-9144-31a271ce7c02\">(image : Wikimedia Commons)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-7b5cd051-40f0-4fda-9e58-4afb82658309\"><strong>Unintentional celebrity<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-c93403d8-dcbc-4872-980e-a957786f7e5b\">Her closest friends remember her as a humble person who enjoyed calm. She neither appreciated questions invading somebody\u2019s privacy nor considered it appropriate to talk about herself. Szymborska did not enjoy ostentation or celebrations \u2013 being declared the the Nobel laureate was considered &#8222;the Stockholm tragedy&#8221; by her friends, as it forced her to give more interviews in a month than she had faced in her life until the Nobel committee&#8217;s decision in 1996.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-07286d83-f0e3-46ab-a187-12357316f4f7\">The poet did not like to talk about literature or poetic techniques, believing that an author&#8217;s expression should come solely in her or his work. The childlike sense of humour emanating from her texts accompanied Szymborska in everyday life. She was known for giving cards with her quirky collages or organizing lotteries in which one could win small, delightfully kitschy prizes. The poet said to Anna Bikont and Joanna Szcz\u0119sna for the album&nbsp;<strong>Commemorative Junk, Friends and Dreams of Wis\u0142awa Szymborska<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-b031361c-2756-4518-a839-d91863435732\"><em>I had quite a happy life, but there was plenty of death and disenchantments in it.&nbsp; But of course I\u2019d rather not talk about personal things, and I wouldn\u2019t like others to talk about them as well. For people, I have a different face, that\u2019s why I\u2019m presented from the anecdotic side, as a happy person, who does nothing besides thinking up games and riddles. (\u2026) When I\u2019m down, worried I don\u2019t go out to people.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-e354e19a-6f2d-45fe-9cab-a5edbc9dd5c1\"><strong>Youth and childhood<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-dfbe07c9-39c2-4a06-8091-6d88bc244b36\">Wis\u0142awa was Szymborska\u2019s second name. Her first name was Maria, the dimunitive of which is Ichna (from Marychna). Ichna\u2019s poetic talent revealed itself in early childhood, when her father, Wincenty, gave her a&nbsp; coin for each of her funny poems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-033e5732-38e8-4340-b5a7-e63ca2b2ab4c\">Wincenty Szymborski was a steward for Count W\u0142adys\u0142aw Zamoyski. After the count\u2019s death in 1924, Szymborska\u2019s family moved from K\u00f3rnik to Toru\u0144 and five years later to Krak\u00f3w.Read more<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-f29255f3-2c70-4e39-b02f-3c4f03175018\">The poet became strongly linked to the former royal city below Wawel Castle. She attended the Urszulanki Sisters\u2019 Gymnasium then participated in underground educational gatherings during the German occupation, finishing her secondary school exams in 1941. She became a railway clerk in 1943, to avoid being deported to Germany.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-d3a2b247-3878-4c90-953e-694064af7ac5\">With her unusual artistic talent, Szymborska illustrated a new edition of Jan Stanis\u0142awski&#8217;s textbook&nbsp;<strong>First Steps in English<\/strong>. She kept writing, debuting in Krak\u00f3w&#8217;s &#8222;Polish Daily&#8221; in 1945 with the poem&nbsp;<strong>Looking for a Word<\/strong>. She studied Polish philology at the Jagiellonian University a year later, then changed to sociology before financial troubles forced her to discontinue her university education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-62c835ea-08b1-4e45-a949-9ae978d68208\"><strong>Poet and editor<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-4931625e-ca14-40b9-afa1-40580eeecd31\">She married the poet Adam W\u0142odek in 1948. The couple moved to the House of Writers in Krupnicza Street 22, a meeting point for great literary figures. Their marriage ended 1954, but they remained friends after their divorce. Szymborska became involved with the writer Kornel Filipowicz fifteen years later. They never married and lived separately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-2ce3b5e8-777b-402b-bd2a-13fa292bc659\">Her first volume of poetry,&nbsp;<strong>That\u2019s Why We Are Alive<\/strong>, was published in 1952, the year she joined the Polish Writers\u2019 Association. Szymborska did not include poems from this collection in future selections and anthologies, or the work from her second volume,&nbsp;<strong>Questioning Yourself<\/strong>, which was also written in the style dictated by that political era. Jerzy Illg, in the book O<strong>n Nobel Prizewinners, Cabarets, Friendships, Books, Women&nbsp;<\/strong>(2009), quoted Szymborska\u2019s reply&nbsp; concerning her affiliations in these early poems:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-6ea15deb-8047-4716-b4eb-9cfb44a9ec8f\"><em>Well, I was unfortunate enough to be young, naive and clueless about things I should\u2019ve evaluated properly right away. Some have the right to judge me harshly for that \u2013 if they really think that a few poems written back then mean more than all the works I wrote later.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-519a2a87-0f0d-4dc3-bbcf-d1a752591b6f\">Szymborska headed the poetry department at the periodical&nbsp;<strong>Literary Life<\/strong>&nbsp;from 1953 to 1966, co-editing the<strong>&nbsp;Literary Post<\/strong>&nbsp;section with W\u0142odzimierz Maci\u0105g. In her column &#8222;Non-required Reading&#8221; she published feullietons (1967-1981), later reprinted in other newspapers and magazines and collected in book form. She collaborated with&nbsp;<strong>Tygodnik Powszechny&nbsp;<\/strong>from 1983, and became involved with the monthly&nbsp;<strong>NaG\u0142os<\/strong>&nbsp;(<strong>OutLoud<\/strong>). She joined the PEN Club in 1988 and became an honourary member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2001.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-0d07387e-8be8-4525-8bee-d8bdae08b919\"><strong>World popularity<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-cbc383ee-8bcf-4e44-9737-e3d7cec06371\"><strong>View with a Grain of Sand<\/strong>, Szymborska&#8217;s first collection after winning the Nobel prize, was published in an edition of 120,000 in the U.S., where a popular volume of poetry might sell 20,000 copies. The German edition of 60,000, translated by Karl Dedicus, set sales records. The Swedish edition&#8217;s print run translated by Andres Bodegard, numbered over 10,000 copies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-2472afe2-8dae-40ff-8915-3323d3b6faf6\">Read moreDuring a meeting in Vilnius in 2000 that included her fellow Nobel laureates&nbsp;Czes\u0142aw Mi\u0142osz&nbsp;and G\u00fcnter Grass, as well as Lithuanian poet and scholar Tomas Venclova, Szymborska was surprised when an actress presented a monodrama based on her poems, translated into Lithuanian. Her reaction is described by Jerzy Illg in his book:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-816375da-a2eb-4918-a488-f5cc08fcbf28\"><em>My poems shouldn\u2019t be used as a basis for playing, singing or dancing. My poems are to be read and thought about!. Suddenly she became frightened: Jesus Christ, I\u2019ll have to go backstage and thank her, say something! (\u2026) I asked Wis\u0142awa later: What did you say to the actress? She replied: I told her that I had no idea that you could do something like that with my poetry.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-65016e86-d488-4b84-acf2-f74db7ac7490\">Szymborska was once asked by Marian Stala why she doesn\u2019t like pathos. Her answer may serve as a general artistic statement:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-dd71f14c-6f6a-4166-afe6-b09f854455ff\"><em>When I write I always feel as if somebody was standing behind me and making funny faces.
