DESCRIPTION:In 2026, the Polish city of Gdynia celebrates the 100th anniversary of
receiving its city rights. Throughout the year, the Baltic port city marks
this milestone with an extensive programme of cultural, artistic and
sporting events that reflect both its rich history and its forward-looking
spirit.
Founded in the 1920s around the construction of Poland's modern seaport,
Gdynia quickly became a symbol of innovation, openness and modernity.
Today, it remains one of Poland's most distinctive cities, renowned for its
modernist architecture, maritime identity and vibrant cultural life.
The centenary celebrations place a strong emphasis on community and
participation. Rather than focusing solely on commemorating the past, the
anniversary programme invites residents and visitors alike to experience
the city through shared cultural events, festivals and public gatherings.
The summer programme features many of Gdynia's best-known festivals,
including Cudawianki, the Sea Festival, the Open'er Festival, the Energa
Ladies' Jazz Festival, the City of Words Festival, and the Polish Film
Festival. The city will also welcome the return of the World Kashubian
Congress, bringing together thousands of participants to celebrate the
region's cultural heritage.
One of the highlights of the anniversary year will take place on 22 August,
when a kilometre-long birthday table will stretch along Marshal Piłsudski
Avenue, symbolising a century of community and shared experiences. The
celebrations will culminate in Poland's largest drone show, with 1,000
drones illuminating the sky above the city.
Gdynia's leading cultural institutions have also prepared a range of
special anniversary projects. The Witold Gombrowicz Municipal Theatre
presents the production Gdynia. Fordewind, while the Danuta Baduszkowa
Musical Theatre premieres the musical The History of Gdynia Written in a
Song. The Gdynia City Museum joins the celebrations with the exhibition
Kachu Totalny. The Life and Work of Kazimierz Ostrowski.
Sport also plays an important role in the centenary programme, with sailing
regattas, running events, cycling competitions and national championships
taking place throughout the year, highlighting Gdynia's long-standing
connection to outdoor activities and the sea.
