Bozar welcomes one of the most powerful and original voices in the Polish cinema scene of the past twenty years: Małgorzata Szumowska. Her name stands out as an exception in the cinematic landscape of the region, having gained widespread attention almost from the beginning of her career. Together with her long-time collaborator Michał Englert, she will be present for two evenings at Bozar to discuss their artistic practice and the stories that inhabit their films.

Małgorzata Szumowska – born in 1973, Szumowska is an alumna of both Kraków’s Jagiellonian University, where she studied art history, and Łódź’s famed film school. It was at the latter that she met Michał Englert, her close collaborator as co-screenwriter and cinematographer ever since. After a series of short movies that soon revealed her as a valuable new voice, she directed her debut feature, Happy Man (2000), nominated for the European Film Awards and awarded at the Thessaloniki Festival. From here she begins a solid and abundant filmography, present in all major competitions, of which stand out titles such as Elles, starring Juliette Binoche; Body, Best Director at the Berlinale; or Mug, Grand Prize of the Jury at the same festival. In 2023, her last film “Women of…” was presented at the Venise International Film Festival in the main competition.

Michał Englert has collaborated with Małgorzata Szumowska since their years at film school. A cinematographer, screenwriter, producer, and director, he contributed to the creation of The Congress by Ari Folman, as well as numerous other films. What sets his work apart is the naturalistic nuance of his cinematography, which imparts a refined delicacy to the films, creating a contrast to the intensity of the subjects explored.

They live in a walled part of the city, have everything their hearts desire, but are bored to distraction. Then Zhenia – a mysterious wellness masseuse from the Ukraine – arrives, and the lives of these Polish nouveau riche suddenly gain some spiritual fulfilment. Since Poland has been a member of the EU, wealth in that country has grown spectacularly. So much so that the nouveau riche are withdrawing into ‘gated communities’.

Bread and Salt is a powerful film that delves into social tensions and personal conflict. The film is inspired by true events and features non-professional actors, giving an authentic and raw quality. It follows Tymek, a talented young pianist returning to his small hometown in Poland, where time seems to have stopped. He witnesses a growing conflict between Arab kebab workers and his local peers, a clash that ultimately turns tragic.

A projection mapping by Elektro Moon Vision studio highlights the vibrancy and resonance of European visual art heritage. Utilizing the interplay of light, 3D vivid frames and echoes of historical and modern visual art, the piece transforms architecture into a living canvas. By harnessing the power of AI, the creators aim to expand the creative potential of digital technology, intertwining the past with the present. This approach promises a celebration of light, in the form of a distinctive luminous audiovisual experience that brings the artworks and cultural echoes into distinctive dynamic digital spatial performance.

Located in a building originally created in 1935 by the Swiss architect Michel Polak, the museum takes a transnational approach to events that have united and divided Europeans through time. While learning about Europe’s past, visitors are encouraged to think critically about its present in order to engage in its future. The museum is open seven days a week and entrance is free. An interactive tablet is available in 24 languages.

Karski Quartet – Belgian/Polish string quartet based in Brussels: Kaja Nowak, Natalia Kotarba – violins, Diede Verpoest – viola, Julia Kotarba – cello

The story of the Karski Quartet began in 2018. The four musicians were brought together as much by shared musical inspiration as by friendship. Long before the three Polish members completed their music degrees, Kaja Nowak in Warsaw, Natalia and Julia Kotarba in Krakow, and met the Belgian Diede Verpoest in Brussels, their interest in other cultures was sparked by the European exchange programmes in which they participated. Travelling abroad with the music school folk group for Natalia and Julia, the international summer music workshop in her hometown of Łańcut for Kaja, were the first glimpses at the possibilities that travelling and studying abroad can offer.

Ever since the Karskis started to play together, they have performed internationally across Europe and in Canada, with a US tour planned for 2026. Spring 2025 will see the release of their new CD with quartets by Grazyna Bacewicz.

String Quartet No. 4 is the best known and most often performed among Grażyna Bacewicz’s seven string quartets. It was written in 1951, following a commission from the Polish Composers’ Union, which invited its members to take part in a composers’ competition for a string quartet organised in Liège. Bacewicz’s piece, entered as “1951”, won the first prize. The “Brussels victory” – as the event was commented on by Grzegorz Fitelberg in a letter to the composer – was discussed extensively by the Polish and foreign press.
