Resonantia Lux

A projection mapping by Elektro Moon Vision studio highlights the vibrancy and resonance of European visual art heritage. Utilizing the interplay of light, 3D vivid frames and echoes of historical and modern visual art, the piece transforms architecture into a living canvas. By harnessing the power of AI, the creators aim to expand the creative potential of digital technology, intertwining the past with the present. This approach promises a celebration of light, in the form of a distinctive luminous audiovisual experience that brings the artworks and cultural echoes into distinctive dynamic digital spatial performance.

The Irène Laub Gallery in Brussels presents a duo show featuring the work of Bernard Villers and Tatiana Wolska. The two artists share the same economy of means, favouring simple gestures and found materials. Their respective practices are punctuated by patterns of fragmentation and reconstruction, and resonate with each other in a subtle dialogue.

Polish artist Tatiana Wolska (1971) lives and works in Brussels. Her multidisciplinary practice is characterised by organic growth, the proliferation of forms and the hybridisation of objects. Using simple means and evocative gestures, Tatiana Wolska transforms plastic bottles, discarded metal and recycled wood into the foundations of mechanisms of propagation and amplification.

Bernard Villers (1939) is a major figure of the Belgian art scene. In his works, Bernard Villers constantly combines surface, light and colour, playing with the infinite possibilities of pictorial practice and its effects on our perception. The Belgian painter seeks his inspiration in the banal, marginal and imperceptible aspects of everyday life to create minimal interventions often inspired by language, poetry or literature.

The story of the Karski Quartet began in 2018. The four musicians were brought together as much by shared musical inspiration as by friendship. Long before the three Polish members completed their music degrees, Kaja Nowak in Warsaw, Natalia and Julia Kotarba in Krakow, and met the Belgian Diede Verpoest in Brussels, their interest in other cultures was sparked by the European exchange programmes in which they participated. Travelling abroad with the music school folk group for Natalia and Julia, the international summer music workshop in her hometown of Łańcut for Kaja, were the first glimpses at the possibilities that travelling and studying abroad can offer.

Ever since the Karskis started to play together, they have performed internationally across Europe and in Canada, with a US tour planned for 2026. Spring 2025 will see the release of their new CD with quartets by Grazyna Bacewicz.

It was written in 1951, following a commission from the Polish Composers’ Union, which invited its members to take part in a composers’ competition for a string quartet organised in Liège. Bacewicz’s piece, entered as “1951”, won the first prize. The “Brussels victory” – as the event was commented on by Grzegorz Fitelberg in a letter to the composer – was discussed extensively by the Polish and foreign press.

The exhibition “Landscape Archive” discusses uncommemorated burial sites of Holocaust victims located on Polish territory. The term Holocaust immediately evokes the image of extermination camps, such as Auschwitz and Treblinka. Meanwhile, the region of Central and Eastern Europe is heavily dotted with the forgotten graves of Jews murdered outside the camps. The victims lie in unmarked graves scattered in forests, roadside ditches and fields. The Zapomniane Foundation is an organization aimed at locating, marking and commemorating them in accordance with Jewish religious law. So far, the Foundation has located about 300 unmarked burial sites of Holocaust victims in Poland, marked 100 of them, and permanently commemorated more than a dozen.

What a year! Thank you for the dozens of events you created together with Polish Institute Brussels! These were artistic, musical, theatrical, literary and scientific events. During this year, many concerts, exhibitions, lectures and meetings took place which would not have been possible without your presence and support. We would like to remind you of a few of them…

Light installation by Katarzyna Tretyn at Bright Festival

The beginning of the year was brightened by Katarzyna Tretyn, who represented the Polish contemporary art scene for the first time at the Bright Festival with a light installation “Astrolabium” – a unique work inspired by the outer space. It was located on the route of the Cinquantenaire park, inside the Pavillon Horta-Lambeaux, also known as the Temple of Human Passions, especially opened to the public on this occasion. The event in the heart of the European capital was particularly special for Poland, due to the 20th anniversary of its EU accession celebrated this year.

Polish Day in Brussels: Writers’ corner & Polish language workshops

We had a great time during the Polish Days in Brussels in May! This year, we focused on the Polish language and literature. We explored the beauty of this complex and challenging language, with its unique rustling sounds and unusual consonant clusters that often puzzle non-native speakers. Available, there were Language Workshops for Foreigners, Writers’ Corner, a photobooth and Poland in the EU – 20th Anniversary Guestbook.

A quote from Wislawa Szymborska lit up libraries

This passing year, we illuminated the libraries in Jette and Woluwe-Saint-Pierre with a quote from Wisława Szymborska in Dutch. The neon signs with the quote “Nothing Happens Twice” were funded and brought to life by the Polish Institute Brussels to honor the Polish Nobel Prize winner on her 100th birthday in 2023. Wisława Szymborska (1923-2012), Polish poet, translator and literary critic, was the winner of the 1996 Nobel Prize in Literature.

EUNIC: Transpoesie – Surrealism

This year we also collaborated with EUNIC Brussels. A particularly important event was the TRANSPOESIE festival, which celebrated poetry and linguistic diversity across Europe, on this particular occasion marking the 100th anniversary of the birth of surrealism. The festival featured many events that brought poetry into your life, such as poetry readings, lunchtime debates, performances and automatic writing sessions. This year, Polish poet Małgorzata Lebda joined the festival at the invitation of the Polish Institute Brussels. Małgorzata Lebda, nominated this year for the prestigious Nike Literary Award, seamlessly blends poetry with prose, art with physical movement, and the human world with the animal kingdom.

As part of the ninth edition of the PhotoBrussels Festival, Ada Zielińska has been invited by La Nombreuse to present her Post Tourism series.

Since 2018, the artist has been playing the game of tomorrow’s tourism, travelling and exploring climatic disasters to detect beauty in these desolate landscapes. From forest fires in California to the great floods of Venice in 2019 and the eruption of a volcano in Iceland, Ada Zielińska satisfies her curiosity for destruction – the leitmotif at the heart of the beginnings of her artistic practice. Ada questions the human propensity to sink into darkness. It’s a form of voyeurism in the face of catastrophe that is quite common in our Western societies.

See the Post Tourism exhibition at La Nombreuse from 24 January to 23 February 2025.

Ada Zielińska

Visual artist working mainly with photography, video and installation. Her main area of interest revolves around the idea of destruction seen as a prerequisite for rebirth. Her creative approach revolves around catastrophic events, experienced in real life or staged – not only to document, but also to explore their aesthetics and the emotions they evoke. Drawing on the notion of post-photography, she seeks to extend the same approach to her audience, deliberately creating the most photogenic environment. This encourages the viewer to try to examine the aesthetics and emotions evoked by her work.

In this podcast Przemysław Czapliński, a distinguished Professor of Polish Literature and author of numerous award-winning works, explores in a highly engaging way how the economic, political, and cultural crises of the 1970s shaped Polish prose.

He focuses on writers Jerzy Andrzejewski, Tadeusz Konwicki, Marek Nowakowski and Kazimierz Brandys, examining their depictions of a society grappling with the erosion of collective values and the rise of individualism—changes that set the stage for Poland’s eventual shift toward capitalism. The lecture, held on 10 October 2024, was part of the MDRN lecture series and was organized with the support of the Polish Institute in Brussels.

Urgent questions are raised about our perception of time and history.

On the occasion of the exhibition, we invite you to an artist talk with Agnieszka Polska and a special screening of her first feature film Hurrah, We Are Still Alive! (2020) as part of Front Raw.
Filmscreening: Hurrah, We Are Still Alive!

An artistic commune is working on a film about Rosa Luxemburg, but the mysterious Director disappears just when they are about to begin filming. Although the crew is fascinated by the Director, they also harbor a deep resentment toward him. The question is: where has he gone and who is this man really, who has so strongly influenced the life of this community? The dynamics of relationships between people living in an artistic and emotional symbiosis prove to be as explosive as they are toxic.

The film is inspired by an artistic group led by Rainer Werner Fassbinder.
