Her name stands out as an exception in the cinematic landscape of the region, having gained widespread attention almost from the beginning of her career. Together with her long-time collaborator <strong>Michał Englert</strong>, she will be present for two evenings at Bozar to discuss their artistic practice and the stories that inhabit their films.</p> <hr /> <p><strong>Małgorzata Szumowska – </strong>born in 1973, Szumowska is an alumna of both Kraków’s Jagiellonian University, where she studied art history, and Łódź’s famed film school. It was at the latter that she met Michał Englert, her close collaborator as co-screenwriter and cinematographer ever since. After a series of short movies that soon revealed her as a valuable new voice, she directed her debut feature, <em>Happy Man </em>(2000), nominated for the European Film Awards and awarded at the Thessaloniki Festival. From here she begins a solid and abundant filmography, present in all major competitions, of which stand out titles such as <em>Elles</em>, starring Juliette Binoche; <em>Body</em>, Best Director at the Berlinale; or <em>Mug</em>, Grand Prize of the Jury at the same festival. In 2023, her last film <em>“Women of…” </em>was presented at the Venise International Film Festival in the main competition.</p> <hr /> <p><strong>Michał Englert </strong>has collaborated with Małgorzata Szumowska since their years at film school. A cinematographer, screenwriter, producer, and director, he contributed to the creation of <em>The Congress </em>by Ari Folman<em>,</em> as well as numerous other films. What sets his work apart is the naturalistic nuance of his cinematography, which imparts a refined delicacy to the films, creating a contrast to the intensity of the subjects explored.</p> <hr /> <div class="event-infos__name"> <p><img decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-16184 alignleft" src="https://instytutpolski.pl/brussels/wp-content/uploads/sites/4/2025/02/3361264_body-01-300x150.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="150" srcset="https://instytutpolski.pl/brussels/wp-content/uploads/sites/4/2025/02/3361264_body-01-300x150.jpg 300w, https://instytutpolski.pl/brussels/wp-content/uploads/sites/4/2025/02/3361264_body-01-768x384.jpg 768w, https://instytutpolski.pl/brussels/wp-content/uploads/sites/4/2025/02/3361264_body-01.jpg 870w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></p> <p style="text-align: left"><strong>‘Body’<br /></strong>Olga, a young woman with an eating disorder and unresolved grief, struggles to live with her jaded coroner father, who suspects their apartment is haunted. Annually, around nine jury and audience awards are handed out. In addition the festival always offers a series of retrospectives and specials. And ever since 2007 the Flemish Audiovisual Fund awards its Wildcards at the festival. </p> </div> </div> </div> <p>The competitions are the beating heart of the festival. Besides the <a href="https://www.kortfilmfestival.be/en/compilation/?t=1&id=284" target="_blank" rel="noopener">European Competition</a>, there are Flemish competitions for <a href="https://www.kortfilmfestival.be/en/compilation/?t=1&id=285" target="_blank" rel="noopener">fiction</a>, <a href="https://www.kortfilmfestival.be/en/compilation/?t=1&id=286" target="_blank" rel="noopener">animation</a> and <a href="https://www.kortfilmfestival.be/en/compilation/?t=1&id=287" target="_blank" rel="noopener">documentary</a>. The perfect chance to find out which young directors will be making it big in the film scene. On Sunday, 1 December, the highly sought after <a href="https://www.kortfilmfestival.be/en/compilation/?t=1&id=288" target="_blank" rel="noopener">VAF Wildcards</a> will be awarded at the festival! </p> <p> </p> <hr /> <p><strong>During the festival, as part of the European Competition, two Polish films will be presented – </strong><em><strong>“Winter” by Tomek Popakul</strong></em><strong> and “ </strong><em><strong>Take me to her</strong></em><strong> ” by Bartlomiej Blaszczynski</strong>.</p> <p>The European Competition is not easy to describe. Liveaction fiction, animation and documentary alternate in an exciting mix of international film talent. From more than 3,000 entries, seven programmes remained. The winner of this category immediately makes it to the longlist of the Oscars, the European Film Awards and for British candidates: the BAFTAs. Equally important: viewers also vote for the audience award.</p> <p><strong>A member of this year’s Competition Jury is Michał Toczek, who was honored with the Peer Award for his film “Be Somebody” during the last edition of the festival. </strong></p> <p> </p> <hr /> <p><strong><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class=" wp-image-15152 alignleft" src="https://instytutpolski.pl/brussels/wp-content/uploads/sites/4/2024/11/Zima-300x169.jpg" alt="" width="334" height="188" srcset="https://instytutpolski.pl/brussels/wp-content/uploads/sites/4/2024/11/Zima-300x169.jpg 300w, https://instytutpolski.pl/brussels/wp-content/uploads/sites/4/2024/11/Zima-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://instytutpolski.pl/brussels/wp-content/uploads/sites/4/2024/11/Zima-768x432.jpg 768w, https://instytutpolski.pl/brussels/wp-content/uploads/sites/4/2024/11/Zima-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https://instytutpolski.pl/brussels/wp-content/uploads/sites/4/2024/11/Zima-1120x630.jpg 1120w, https://instytutpolski.pl/brussels/wp-content/uploads/sites/4/2024/11/Zima.jpg 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 334px) 100vw, 334px" />Zima</strong><br />Tomek Popakul, Kasumi Ozeki • Poland • 2023 • 26 min.<br />In the winter silence, the lagoon freezes and the unspoken resurfaces like a crack in the ice.
