In 2019, the centenary of Marian Pankowski’s birth will remind us of this exceptional author whose destiny was linked to Belgium and Europe; the destiny of a Pole who survived Auschwitz and other concentration camps. A surprising writer, he places his native Sanok in the Carpathians and then Brussels at the centre of his writings, in his poetic work in Polish and French. Award-winning and translated into several languages, he has made a name for himself as a proponent and playwright, courageously challenging stereotypes, clich\u00e9s and traditions. In his writings, he attacked the taboos of the Catholic religion, homosexuality, politeness and even Judaism. He defended the singularity and imagination of an individual being who is nevertheless attentive to what can happen in the community.<\/p>\n

Professor at the Free University of Brussels, Marian Pankowski has taught for decades the beauty of the Polish but also the French language and the particularities of the two literary registers. Insubordinate and elegant, provocative and serious, her work deserves our full attention because it crosses boundaries.<\/p>\n
