The 54th edition of the Foire du Livre (Brussels Book Fair) invites literature enthusiasts to reflect on our connection with the living world, reality, and human solidarity through the theme \u201cHabiter le monde.\u201d Place de l\u2019Europe – Citizens’ Agora will host European writers and publishers who will be discussing the topical issues, in view to supporting the shared European \u00a0values.<\/p>\n

Au nom du p\u00e8re<\/em>: Mateusz Paku\u0142a and Lukas B\u00e4rfuss are both renowned authors and playwrights. In his award-winning book \u201cComment je n\u2019ai pas tu\u00e9 mon p\u00e8re et combien je le regrette\u201d (PL: \u201cJak nie zabi\u0142em swojego ojca i jak bardzo tego \u017ca\u0142uj\u0119\u201d), which he adapted for the stage, Mateusz Paku\u0142a advocates for the right to die with dignity. Lukas B\u00e4rfuss, on the other hand, distances himself from pathos in his work \u201cLe carton de mon p\u00e8re\u201d, a poignant reflection on inheritance, as he explores the impact of the absence of his unknown father. Both works serve as tributes to lost fathers, where love remains present.<\/p>\n

Author and director, Mateusz Paku\u0142a has received multiple awards for his plays, adaptations and productions. In Poland, he has been honored with the Gdynia Drama Award and the special prize from Teatr<\/em> magazine. He has published several collections of plays.<\/p>\n

The book \u201cComment je n\u2019ai pas tu\u00e9 mon p\u00e8re et combien je le regrette\u201d (PL: \u201cJak nie zabi\u0142em swojego ojca i jak bardzo tego \u017ca\u0142uj\u0119\u201d), his first work of prose published in 2021, was nominated for the Gdynia Literary Award and the Witold Gombrowicz Literary Prize in Poland. In January 2023, a theatrical adaptation of the book, directed by Paku\u0142a himself, premiered at \u0141a\u017ania Nowa Theatre in Krak\u00f3w and Stefan \u017beromski Theatre in Kielce. This production earned him a nomination for the prestigious Polityka Passports, one of Poland\u2019s most significant cultural awards, presented annually by Polityka<\/em> magazine.<\/p>\n

His latest books include \u201cSk\u00f3ra po dziadku\u201d (Grandfather\u2019s Skin), published in August 2024, and \u201cLucek, Ludwika i sprawa \u015bwi\u0119tego Jogurta\u201d (Lucek, Ludwika, and the Case of the Holy Yogurt), a novel for young readers released in early 2025.<\/p>\n

Lukas B\u00e4rfuss is a Swiss writer and theatre director based in Germany. He is one of the most prominent German-speaking authors of today. Politically engaged and outspoken, following in the tradition of the great German intellectuals, he advocates for a world where intellectual values outweigh the economic concerns.
Before becoming a full-time writer, B\u00e4rfuss worked as a scrap dealer and gardener, eventually taking over a bookstore. His writing engages with the pressing social issues, particularly those affecting the most vulnerable. As a playwright, he brings a distinctive rhythmic intensity to his texts, enhancing their powerful sense of realism. He has published numerous plays and literary works. In 2019, he received the Georg-B\u00fcchner Prize, one of the most prestigious German literary awards, for his entire work. His book \u201cHundert Tage\u201d, his first novel, and \u201cKoala\u201d, as well as the plays \u201cDie sexuellen Neurosen unserer Eltern\u201d and \u201cDer Bus\u201d, have been translated into Polish.<\/p>\n
