R\u00f3\u017cycki is a poet from peripheral Poland, a place of myths and mystery where other figures such as Adam Zagajewski and Bruno Schulz can be found. R\u00f3\u017cycki\u00a0will present the Dutch version of his pivotal work, together with <strong>translator Alexandre Popowycz, on\u00a0April 27, 2019 at the Po\u00ebziecentrum in Ghent. <\/strong>The presentation will be<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>introduced by\u00a0<strong>Kris Van Heuckelom,\u00a0<\/strong>prof. dr. of Slavistics and Polish Literature.<br \/><br \/><br \/><strong>About &#8222;Kolonies&#8221;<\/strong><br \/>R\u00f3\u017cycki\u2019s\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/culture.pl\/en\/work\/colonies-tomasz-rozycki\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kolonies<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>offers \u2013 also in Dutch, thanks to the most excellent translation by Alexandre Popowycz \u2013 a haunting and breathtaking reading experience. The celebrated Polish poet, author and columnist writes about the reality of displacement in the aftermath of the Second World War. Through cyclical, repetitive poems, he takes the reader on a journey through time and space, seemingly pouring the colonial aspirations of the interbellum into a\u00a0 literary form.<br \/><br \/><br \/><strong>About Tomasz R\u00f3\u017cycki<\/strong>\u00a0<br \/><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/culture.pl\/en\/artist\/tomasz-rozycki\">Tomasz R\u00f3\u017cycki<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>(1970)\u00a0studied Roman Languages and worked as a French teacher before rising to fame as a poet, columnist and translator (e.g. Mallarm\u00e9\u2019s\u00a0<em>Un Coup de d<\/em><em>\u00e9<\/em><em>s<\/em>).\u00a0<em>Kolonies<\/em>\u00a0was nominated in 2007 for the notable Polish NIKE Prize for Literature. Its English translation was in turn nominated for the Griffin Poetry Prize and the Oxford-Weidenfeld Translation Prize (UK), and won the Northern California Book Award for Poetry in Translation (USA). When living in Kinshasa, he was a poetry blogger for MO*. He was an active member of the Gentse Collectief van Po\u00ebzievertalers (a collective of translators of poetry from the Ghent University) for more than ten years.
