The writer\u00a0Magdalena TULLI<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0will be participating in the grand\u00a0international festival Passa Porta<\/strong><\/a>. She will be in conversation with the philosopher\u00a0Alicja GESCINSKA<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0about the author\u2019s vision of the world, focusing in particular on the social topic of migration.\u00a0

Magdalena TULLI<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>was born into a Polish-Italian family in 1955. A resident of Warsaw, she works as a writer and translator from French and Italian (Marcel Proust, Italo Calvino, Fleur Jaeggy). Her first novel, entitled\u00a0Sny i kamienie<\/em>\u00a0and published in1995, was called \u2018antiprose\u2019 by the Krakow Book Institute, insofar as it is not the place or action of the novel which stands out but rather the process of general disorganisation, transience, degradation and the suffering which is part and parcel of the world which is described in its pages. It was in this vein that she published her next works:\u00a0W Cierwieni<\/em>\u00a0in 1998\u00a0(W.A.B., Warsaw, translated under the title\u00a0Dans le rouge<\/em>\u00a0by Laurence Dy\u00e8vre) followed by\u00a0Tryby<\/em>\u00a0in 2003 (W.A.B., Warsaw). The first of these novels received the prestigious\u00a0Ko\u015bcielski foundation prize<\/a>, whilst the next two netted her nominations for the greatest Polish literary prize, the\u00a0NIKE prize<\/a>. Her subsequent works also received important prizes.
Her novel\u00a0Skaza<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>(W.A.B, Warsaw, 2006, translated into English as\u00a0Flaw<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/a>by Bill Johnston) introduced characters who are refugees struggling with an unfathomable reality. They will form part of the discussion with Alicja GESCINSKA.\u00a0

Alicja GESCINSKA<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0arrived in Belgium with her parents as the communist bloc was disintegrating. The holder of a doctorate in philisophy, she achieved success with a wide audience with her book\u00a0De verovering van de vrijheid<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(\u2018The Conquest of Freedom\u2019), in which she makes a philosophical plea for more positive freedom and which assured her place in the circle of the most influential young Dutch-speaking intellectuals. The author of humourous dispatches and columns for various newspapers and periodicals, she published her first novel in February 2016,\u00a0Een soort van liefde<\/em><\/a>. After three years spent in the United States teaching Political Science at Amherst College, she returned to Flanders where she achieved media notoriety with her programme\u00a0Wanderlust<\/em>\u00a0(Canvas, September-October 2016), which consisted of discussions with philosophers, artists, writers and scientists.
Whilst\u00a0Krzysztof PENDERECKI<\/a>\u00a0was in Brussels in December 2016, Gescinska interviewed the maestro for the newspaper\u00a0De Standaard<\/em>.<\/p>\n
