The KLARAFESTIVAL presents\u00a0Karol SZYMANOWSKI<\/strong>\u2019s\u00a0Stabat Mater<\/em>\u00a0alongside its collaboration with the\u00a0Wroclaw National Forum of Music<\/strong>\u00a0(Narodowe Forum Muzyki we Wroc\u0142awiu,\u00a0NFM<\/a>).\u00a0
Stabat Mater<\/em>, composed by SZYMANOWSKI and prompted by the grief suffered by the composer\u2019s sister, who had just lost her little girl Ala, will be played by the London Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by the Russian\u00a0Vladimir JUROWSKI<\/strong>, with three Polish soloists, soprano\u00a0El\u017cbieta SZMYTKA<\/strong>, mezzo-soprano\u00a0Agnieszka REHLIS<\/strong>\u00a0and baritone\u00a0Andrzej DOBBER<\/strong>.

After spending 123 years absent from the map of Europe, Poland regained its independence under the terms of the Treaty of Versailles in 1918. The\u00a0Second Polish Republic<\/strong>\u00a0had been born. Everything needed to be shaken up, socially and culturally speaking. Within this debate,\u00a0Karol SZYMANOWSKI<\/strong>\u00a0played an active role in the field of music, notably in his reflections on national style and the way in which he combined modernity and tradition. The musicologist Zofia HELMAN remarks that Szymanowski\u2019s conception of national style \u2018was a response to his own work as a composer and those who followed in his footsteps. In his conception, popular music, especially that of the Tatras, which is marked by its archaism, needed to become the archtype of Polishness. (…) In the\u00a0Stabat Mater for soloists, choir and orchestra opus 53<\/em><\/strong>, the composer created a Polish atmosphere by marrying popular elements with modern harmonic and tonal means\u2019 but without \u2018citing\u2019 the music of the mountains, found in Zakopane which he made his permanent home in 1930, suffering from tuberculosis. That same year, Li\u00e8ge hosted the Festival de la Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 Internationale de Musique Contemporaine (SMIC); this was when Belgian audiences discovered the Stabat Mater, on 6 September 1930, directed by the composer\u2019s friend\u00a0Grzegorz FITELBERG<\/strong>. Jo\u00eblle Van Hyfte points out that \u2018the concert resonated beyond Belgium, as, in the pages of La Revue Musicale in Paris, Henry Pruni\u00e8res, who had attended the festival, described the Stabat Mater as an \u2018admirable page of sacred music, the most moving that has ever been written.\u2019 \u00a0

Two other compositions will be played alongside Szymanowski\u2019s Stabat Mater:\u00a0Sieben Worte<\/em>\u00a0by Sofia GUBAIDULINA\u00a0and\u00a0Psalm 23<\/em>\u00a0by Alexander von ZEMLINSKY.
