Ziemowit SZCZEREK<\/strong>, author of a gonzo report on Ukraine entitled\u00a0<\/span>Przyjdzie Mordor i nas zje, czyli tajna historia Slowian<\/em>\u00a0(Mordor will come and eat us, or a secret history of the Slavs) published in 2013 by\u00a0<\/span>Korporacja Ha!Art<\/a>\u00a0and which, the same year, picked up the\u00a0<\/span>Paszport Polityki<\/a>\u00a0prize (one of the main Polish prizes for art), will be taking part in the debate\u00a0<\/span>„Ukraine in the eyes of the Eastern European Intelligentsia”<\/strong>\u00a0which aims to give a voice to intellectuals and artists from central Europe who have witnessed the way society has been transformed in Ukraine.<\/span>

The debate, organised by\u00a0<\/span>EUNIC Bruxelles<\/a>, the network of national European cultural institutions in Brussels (the Polish Institute is a member), is taking place to mark the premiere at\u00a0<\/span>BOZAR\u00a0<\/strong>of the film film\u00a0<\/span>Maidan<\/em>\u00a0by the Ukrainian documentary film-maker\u00a0<\/span>Sergei LOZNITSA<\/strong>. The film, which recounts the seismic shift which Ukraine has undegone politically and socially, was made with a cameraman in the middle of the crowd which gathered on the Maidan (Independence Square), Kiev’s central market place, during the upheaval of 2014 which led to the fall of President Yanukovych.<\/span>

Ziemowit SZCZEREK\u00a0<\/strong>is a Polish writer, journalist and translator who was born in 1978. After studying law and political science, he specialised in the field of central and Eastern Europe, on which he writes for a number of internet information portals. Alongside his doctorate in sociology, he writes columns for the publisher Korporacja Ha!Art. He is known for his alternative history of Poland as well as his report \u2013 which he himself dubs 'gonzo’ in style \u2013 on Ukraine:\u00a0Mordor przyjdzie i nas zje<\/em>. He is preoccupied with issues related to the difficulty inherent in defining Eastern Europe as a definite form as well as on the objects which bring it to life. His biting wit and his scathing descriptions of a 'Post-Soviet’ state in search of shared values won him the Paszport Polityki prize in 2013.
