The drama „Filip” is based on a novel with autobiographical threads by the Polish writer of Jewish origin Leopold Tyrmand. According to critics, no one in the history of Polish cinema has ever told the story of war in such a way. Devoid of pathos and heroism, the film tells the story of a latent personal resistance to the Nazi regime during the Second World War. Its protagonist, Filip, is a controversial and ambiguous figure. A Polish Jew and a runaway from the Warsaw ghetto, he works as a waiter in one of Frankfurt’s top-notch restaurants while pretending to be French. All of this is Filip’s tightly-knit plot to take revenge on the Nazis.
„Filip” will certainly appeal to the Ukrainian audience, as the protagonist’s feelings – confusion, anger, brokenness, desire for revenge, the search for oneself in a world distorted by war – have become familiar to most of us. The protagonist’s story is universal for our times when thousands of Ukrainians are forced to rebuild their lives from scratch under dire conditions. The film allows us to empathize with the experiences of others and reflect on how to resolve complex moral questions to which there is no clear answer.
