DESCRIPTION:Dates: 11–15 November 2026Venue: Upstairs at the Gatehouse,
LondonDuration: 90 minutesLanguage: English
At the heart of the musical is one of Warsaw’s best-known legends: the
story of the Basilisk, a fearsome creature said to have lived in a cellar
beneath the city’s Old Town, whose deadly gaze could turn anyone who
looked at it to stone.
In Basilitrix, a teenage girl descends into the dungeons beneath Warsaw in
search of her lost sister, where she must face the legendary monster. Above
ground, her mother fights a different battle, bringing a divided community
together to overcome fear. Both race against time to save their family and
city. Watching it all unfold is the Rat Squad,a group of sharp-eyed
storytellers whose commentary reveals how rumours spread, stories shift and
fear can harden into history.
Reimagining the age-old Polish legend through a contemporary, feminist
lens, Basilitrix explores courage, curiosity and truth, asking what happens
when stories built on fear are questioned and previously unheard voices are
given space. Blending rock and jazz with a Slavic folk twist, the musical
creates a darkly playful world where humour, danger and tenderness meet.
The production is presented by Out of This Crow Productions Ltd, a
London-based non-profit production company creating musical theatre and
cultural events. Its work focuses on Slavic folklore, Central and Eastern
European cultural identity, migration and the visibility of
underrepresented artists in the UK theatre sector.
Basilitrix is written by Ida Wrona, a founder of Out of This Crow
Productions Ltd, with music by Ida Wrona, Michał Grodzki, Anita Zawadzka
and Anna Drewniok. The creative team includes Kinga Pazik (Director),
Laoise Fleming (Musical Director), Ewelina Głowacka (Set & Costume
Designer) and Katya Bonk (Marketing Designer).
The production forms part of Voila! Theatre Festival 2026, a multi-venue,
panlingual theatre festival taking place across London from 2 to 22
November. Produced by The Cockpit, Voila! brings together international
artists, emerging voices and established theatre-makers, with a focus on
work that crosses borders, languages and cultures. The 2026 festival takes
