Other than that, he should be trusted completely.”
8 - 12th September 2026 | 19:30PM | Golden Goose Theatre, London
For five performances only, Broken Nose Theatre presents Wznowienie (“The Revival”), a remarkable and darkly funny work by one of Poland’s most celebrated playwrights and directors, Maciej Wojtyszko.
Performed in the original Polish with English surtitles, this is a rare opportunity for London audiences to experience a masterwork of contemporary Polish theatre.
Come and discover a remarkable piece of Polish theatre: funny, unsettling, intimate and unexpectedly devastating.
About the Play
Two actresses return to the stage to recreate the final performance of a legendary director they both loved.
As they restage his work, memories begin to surface. Their shared history with Tadeusz; his brilliance, his power, his demands, and the circumstances surrounding his death, becomes increasingly difficult to separate from the performance itself.
Was his death an accident? Could it have been suicide? And what happens when admiration, artistic devotion and emotional dependence become impossible to untangle?
At the centre of the production is a deceptively simple puppet show: something playful, almost childish, which gradually becomes a vessel for grief, memory, disappointment and everything that cannot easily be said.
Sharp, funny and quietly devastating, Wznowienie explores artistic genius and its darker consequences, the complicated relationships between women and powerful men, and the emotional cost of devotion. It is a nuanced and deeply human story about creativity, trauma, love and the stories we tell ourselves in order to keep going.
What begins as a revival of an old performance becomes something far more personal.
A Unique Collaboration
This London production has a special connection to its author.
Maciej Wojtyszko is personally connected to one of the actresses and has been collaborating with the company on this production, revisiting and rewriting parts of the text specifically for these performers.
The result is not simply a revival, but a living, evolving encounter between playwright, performers and the present moment.
About the Playwright
Maciej Wojtyszko
Maciej Wojtyszko is one of Poland’s most acclaimed directors, playwrights and screenwriters. His distinguished career spans more than five decades and includes landmark work across theatre, television and film.
As a director, he is known for major productions including Bulgakov’s Ostatnie dni and The Master and Margarita, Gombrowicz’s Ferdydurke, and Voltaire’s Candide.
His work has been recognised with some of Poland’s most prestigious honours, including the Leon Schiller Award (1990), the Officer’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta (2011) and the Norwid Award (2015).
His plays include Kraina kłamczuchów, Semiramida, Chryje z Polską and Dowód na istnienie drugiego.
The Team
Director : Kirill Ivanov
Kirill Ivanov is a theatre and screen director whose work has been presented at numerous international festivals, including the Creative Horizons Festival (2023), Festival de Cine Histórico Tepe… 5a Edición (2023), the Polish International Film Festival (2023) and The Most International Short Film Festival (2024).
He also worked for three years at the historic Alexandrinsky Theatre.
Krystyna: Urszula Malka
Urszula Malka is a renowned Polish actress and a former member of Lev Dodin’s legendary repertory company at the Maly Drama Theatre, where she worked for 20 years.
Her career has taken her to major theatres and stages across Poland, France, Italy, Germany, China and the United States, including New York's Baryshnikov Arts Centre. She has originated numerous leading roles, including the title role in Warszawska Melodia, and has appeared in productions including Lorenzaccio, Lunapark, Rusałka and Nasza klasa. Historia w XIV lekcjach.
Joanna: Anastazja Iskra
Anastazja Iskra is an actress and experienced puppeteer who studied at the prestigious Moscow Art Theatre School.
She has performed in professional dramatic and puppet theatres in Poland and internationally, bringing together physical performance, acting and puppetry in her work.
Puppet Design: Karolina Martin
Karolina Martin is a graduate of the Theatre Academy in Warsaw, Białystok branch.
In 2020, she received the POLUNIMA Award for her monodrama Trzy ćwierci do śmierci.
