The driver Sara (Lena G\u00f3ra), has been kicked out of her home amidst a break-up, steals a car, then seemingly falls in love with its owner (John Hawkes,) setting out on a journey to find him<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Roving Woman opens on Sara banging on her ex-boyfriend\u2019s door. Locked out, reeling, a little drunk and with nowhere to go, she begins to walk. What follows is a journey through the Joshua Tree desert, in a stolen car, that embraces the anonymity of travel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With sparse dialogue, a grubby feel and melancholic soundtrack, we are Sara\u2019s passengers on her ride to nowhere. Some scenes play out through dusty car windows, often with the action taking place off screen \u2013 we\u2019re just waiting in the car for Sara until we continue roving. Some interactions with fellow wandering souls are troubling, others illuminating. She takes what she needs from these chance meetings and moves on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the stolen car, Sara snuggles into a jumper found on the back seat, rifles through loose change and scrutinizes the CD collection. After finding a homemade CD marked \u201cfor Mimi\u201d filled with original love songs, she decides to return the car to its owner, played by Academy Award-nominee John Hawkes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We feel this is a journey Sara has been destined to make for a long time. This film contains the hallmark of a classic break-up film \u2013 a search for epiphany \u2013 but it doesn\u2019t hand us the road map to self-discovery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since its premiere the film has received a string of great reviews, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>\u201c<\/strong><\/em><strong><em>Roving Woman manages to resonate as a film of reflection and self-discovery\u2026 Director Chmielewski\u2019sability to channel Wenders\u2019 aesthetic filmmaking deserves praise here.
