Following its launch by the Adam Mickieiwcz Institute in 2021, the Joy and Devotion Festival returns with eight centuries of exquisite music performed by some of the finest UK choral ensembles \u2013 Polyphony, The Gesualdo Six and Rodolfus Choir.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The series includes three richly programmed concerts in the glorious acoustic of St Martin-in-the-Fields. It is part of the Institute\u2019s mission to share the abundance of Polish culture with international audiences. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year the Festival includes the world premiere of an extraordinary new setting of the Latin Mass<\/strong> by Marek Raczy\u0144ski, a rising star of the Polish choral scene on the international stage, as well as more than twenty UK premieres. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of these there are two moving motets to Mary, Mother of God, by the late Henryk Miko\u0142aj G\u00f3recki<\/a>, known to many worldwide for his Symphony of Sorrowful Songs<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another notable premier piece Festival Artistic Director is Pawe\u0142 \u0141ukaszewski<\/a>\u2019s centenary tribute to St John Paul II, Missa Sancti Papae Ioannis Pauli Secundi Magni<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

November 8 – 7.30pm,<\/strong> Polyphony: Music for a Polish Pope<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Joy & Devotion 2022 opens on 8 November with Stephen Layton conducting Polyphony, a choir he founded in 1986 and now widely regarded as one of the best small professional choirs in the world. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The concert celebrates the legacy of St John Paul II who helped to secure the peaceful collapse of the Soviet Union and thus the liberation of the Polish nation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In doing so, he inspired his native Polish composers to write some of the most communicative choral pieces of the 20th century. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wojciech Kilar<\/a>\u2019s Agnus Dei<\/strong> commences the evening: an affecting wall of sound and prayer for peace, composed in 2000. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pawe\u0142 \u0141ukaszewski\u2019s papal tribute, written to mark the centenary of St John Paul II\u2019s birth in 2020, will receive its UK premiere. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The evening will conclude with Marian Borkowski\u2019s powerful Libera me<\/strong>. Organist Rupert Jeffcoat takes on Moryto\u2019s Veni Creator<\/strong> and Przybylski\u2019s K\u00f6lner Fanfare<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

November 10 – Gaude Mater Polonia – Polish Music for the Virgin Mary<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Gesualdo Six led by Owain Park make a welcome return to the Festival and St Martin\u2019s for a concert themed around the Virgin Mary on November 10.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For many Polish Catholics, Mary is revered as the eternal Queen of Poland, and as such has inspired the warmest of musical tributes across the centuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The centrepiece of this concert is the world premiere of a brand-new mass in her honour, commissioned specially from composer Marek Raczynski, one of the most prominent members of the Poland\u2019s thriving contemporary music scene. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new work weaves its way through a programme that includes the UK premiere of two of G\u00f3recki\u2019s songs from 1986 in praise of the Blessed Virgin, Baroque composer Bart\u0142omiej P\u0119kiel\u2019s striking Ave Maria<\/strong> (c.1661-9) and Aleksandra Chmielewska\u2019s Salutatio angelica<\/strong> (2015), interespesed with solo organ works by Marian Sawa<\/a> and Micha\u0142 Schaeffer, for which Rupert Jeffcoat returns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

11 November – Rodolfus Choir: Masters of Polish Polyphony<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This year\u2019s Festival concludes with an evening of ancient and modern music performed by the young singers of Rodolfus Choir under the direction of Ralph Allwood on 11 November. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bogurodzica<\/strong>, medieval Poland\u2019s great hymn to the Virgin Mary, will feature in their programme alongside music by Marian Sawa (1937-2005) including a chorale prelude for organ, Adoro te devote<\/strong>, performed by Rupert Jeffcoat. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This concert will also see the premiere of dynamic young composer Jan Krutul\u2019s Missa brevis<\/strong> and 17th-century motets by Grzegorz Gerwazy Gorczycki, one of Poland\u2019s greatest Baroque composers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cellist Leo Popplewell will perform in Roxanna Panufnik<\/a>\u2019s All Shall Be Well<\/strong> (2009).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Panufnik is a British composer of Polish heritage. Rodolfus Choir, praised for their beautiful and memorable performances, boast some of the finest choristers in the country and promise to give eloquent interpretations of these Polish masterpieces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is part of the Institute\u2019s mission to share the abundance of Polish culture with international audiences. \nThis year the Festival includes the world premiere of an extraordinary new setting of the Latin Mass by Marek Raczy\u0144ski, a rising star of the Polish choral scene on the international stage, as well as more than twenty UK premieres. \nOf these there are two moving motets to Mary, Mother of God, by the late Henryk Miko\u0142aj G\u00f3recki, known to many worldwide for his Symphony of Sorrowful Songs. \nAnother notable premier piece Festival Artistic Director is Pawe\u0142 \u0141ukaszewski\u2019s centenary tribute to St John Paul II, Missa Sancti Papae Ioannis Pauli Secundi Magni.\nNovember 8 - 7.30pm, Polyphony: Music for a Polish Pope\nJoy & Devotion 2022 opens on 8 November with Stephen Layton conducting Polyphony, a choir he founded in 1986 and now widely regarded as one of the best small professional choirs in the world. \nThe concert celebrates the legacy of St John Paul II who helped to secure the peaceful collapse of the Soviet Union and thus the liberation of the Polish nation. \nIn doing so, he inspired his native Polish composers to write some of the most communicative choral pieces of the 20th century. \nWojciech Kilar\u2019s Agnus Dei commences the evening: an affecting wall of sound and prayer for peace, composed in 2000. \nPawe\u0142 \u0141ukaszewski\u2019s papal tribute, written to mark the centenary of St John Paul II\u2019s birth in 2020, will receive its UK premiere. \nThe evening will conclude with Marian Borkowski\u2019s powerful Libera me. Organist Rupert Jeffcoat takes on Moryto\u2019s Veni Creator and Przybylski\u2019s K\u00f6lner Fanfare.\nBooking: Polyphony: Music for a Polish Pope\nNovember 10 - Gaude Mater Polonia - Polish Music for the Virgin Mary\nThe Gesualdo Six led by Owain Park make a welcome return to the Festival and St Martin\u2019s for a concert themed around the Virgin Mary on November 10.\nFor many Polish Catholics, Mary is revered as the eternal Queen of Poland, and as such has inspired the warmest of musical tributes across the centuries.\nThe centrepiece of this concert is the world premiere of a brand-new mass in her honour, commissioned specially from composer Marek Raczynski, one of the most prominent members of the Poland\u2019s thriving contemporary music scene. \nThe new work weaves its way through a programme that includes the UK premiere of two of G\u00f3recki\u2019s songs from 1986 in praise of the Blessed Virgin, Baroque composer Bart\u0142omiej P\u0119kiel\u2019s striking Ave Maria (c.1661-9) and Aleksandra Chmielewska\u2019s Salutatio angelica (2015), interespesed with solo organ works by Marian Sawa and Micha\u0142 Schaeffer, for which Rupert Jeffcoat returns.\nBooking: Gaude Mater Polonia \u2013 Polish Music for the Virgin Mary\n11 November - Rodolfus Choir: Masters of Polish Polyphony\nThis year\u2019s Festival concludes with an evening of ancient and modern music performed by the young singers of Rodolfus Choir under the direction of Ralph Allwood on 11 November. \nBogurodzica, medieval Poland\u2019s great hymn to the Virgin Mary, will feature in their programme alongside music by Marian Sawa (1937-2005) including a chorale prelude for organ, Adoro te devote, performed by Rupert Jeffcoat. \nThis concert will also see the premiere of dynamic young composer Jan Krutul\u2019s Missa brevis and 17th-century motets by Grzegorz Gerwazy Gorczycki, one of Poland\u2019s greatest Baroque composers. \nCellist Leo Popplewell will perform in Roxanna Panufnik\u2019s All Shall Be Well (2009).\nPanufnik is a British composer of Polish heritage.
