On the occasion of the National Reading Day, Embassy of the Republic of Poland and The Polish Institute New Delhi organized the National Reading which took place on Saturday, September 16th at the Cinema hall in the Embassy\u2019s premises, in which around 40 people took part in the reading of Eliza Orzeszkowa’s novel „Nad Niemnem” (On the Niemnem). Along with their professor Dr. Tatiana Szurlej from the Department of Slavonic & Finno Ugrian Studies, University of Delhi, a group of Indian students pursuing Polish language also took part in the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eliza Orzeszkowa (1841 \u2013 1910) was a leading Polish writer of the Positivism movement nominated in 1905 for the Nobel Prize in Literature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNad Niemnem\u201d is the most famous novel by Eliza Orzeszkowa. It was written in the years 1886\u201387 and was published in book form in 1888.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The novel enjoyed popularity and recognition of successive generations of readers. It is one of the most important works of Polish literature dealing with the subject of the January Uprising, the 160th anniversary of which is celebrated in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The National Reading Day campaign has been organized since 2012 on the initiative of the President of Poland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
