Polish animation „Zima\u201d directed by Tomek Popakul and Kasumi Ozeki won Silver Conch for best international animation at the 18th edition of the Mumbai International Film Festival. The festival hosted by Films Division of India, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India took place from 15-21 June 2024.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tomek Popakul graduated from Lodz Film School in direction animation and special effects. He collaborated with Kasumi Ozeki before on „Acid Rain” and „Moon”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cZima” produced in 2023 and based on Tomek Popakul\u2019s script, explores themes of violence and humanity\u2019s relationship with nature. It is focusing on the exploitation of the natural world and the ways this domination is justified through folklore and religious traditions. Set in a remote town, the film captures the intricate dynamics between people and their environment, offering a powerful reflection on the consequences of human actions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

18th edition MIFF’s jury members on \u201cZima\u201d:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We had some amazing submissions of documentaries and animations from across the world, but when we looked at \u2018Zima,\u2019 it was something very innovative. It was breaking barriers creatively and in a very simplistic way telling a very complex story.<\/em> – commented an acclaimed Indian filmmaker, Bharat Bala. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

„Zima” was so extraordinary, so brave and effective. It must be very difficult for the makers to come up with design, the look and feel which was so good. Congratulations to the entire team of „Zima”. I loved this movie and was the first one to vote for the award<\/em> – Keiko Hagihara Bang explained. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the absence of the film director, Dr. Magdalena  Filipczuk, Acting Director of the Polish Institute, received the award. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When telling the story of rebels from a small seaside town, Popakul boldly uses various artistic styles. He draws his characters with a minimalist line, making them look as if they were taken from a sketchbook, but he paints the world around them differently\u2014focusing on the plasticity of colourful spots, not on the detail or realism of the image. By creating his own vision, the director also encourages the viewer to look for associations and inspiration<\/em>. – Filipczuk expressed her opinion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
