The Himalayan Literature Festival 2026 presented two landmark Polish cinematic classics – Lalka (The Doll) <\/em>and In Desert and Wilderness<\/em> – both adapted from celebrated literary masterpieces by two towering figures of Polish literature: Boles\u0142aw Prus and Henryk Sienkiewicz, recipient of the 1905 Nobel Prize in Literature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Desert and Wilderness <\/em>(1973) directed by W. \u015alesicki, based on Sienkiewicz\u2019s beloved novel, follows the extraordinary journey of two young friends – Polish boy Sta\u015b Tarkowski and English girl Nell Rawlison – who are kidnapped during the Mahdist War in Sudan, embarking on an unforgettable adventure of courage, resilience, and friendship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Doll<\/em> (1968) directed by W. Haas, adapted from Boles\u0142aw Prus\u2019 iconic novel, presents a powerful portrait of romantic longing, social change, and the frustrations of an ambitious man confronting the limitations and backwardness of his society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The screenings were introduced to audiences by Murtaza Ali Khan, Public Diplomacy and Cultural Expert, Polish Institute New Delhi, who contextualized the films within Poland\u2019s rich literary and cinematic traditions and reflected on the enduring relevance of these classics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A panel discussion featuring Khan exploring the intersection of film and poetry also put spotight on the legacy of master Polish filmmakers like Andrzej Wajda, Wojciech Has, and Krzysztof Kie\u015blowski.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The festival was further enriched by the presence of Lokmanya Golchha, Honorary Consul General of the Republic of Poland for Nepal, who was felicitated in recognition of his contribution to strengthening cultural ties and fostering friendship between Poland and Nepal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
