Meet Over Lunch: Jaroslaw Kozakiewicz, Critical architecture: design strategies and artistic practices\u2014at Residency Unlimited,<\/strong> Monday, October 28, 1:00PM<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Jaros\u0142aw Kozakiewicz<\/a> is a sculptor, author of conceptual architectural land-art projects, installations and set designs that demonstrate deep humanistic approach. Some of Kozakiewicz\u00b4s projects refer to the tradition of garden architecture, others to the strategy of conceptual art, land art. Kozakiewicz\u2019s quest has led him or the utopian architecture of the 1960s and 1970s. The artist creates models of conceptual and critical architecture, that are not always intended to be realized but rather to address or solve specific problems. He refers to them as diagnostic instruments designed to assess the functioning of the human living environment and the failures that arise in urban planning and construction. The inspirations for his artistic-architectural and urbanistic projects include, among other things, contemporary ecology, genetics, physics, astronomy, and ancient cosmological concepts searching for relations between microcosm and macrocosm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018Two things bind Kozakiewicz\u2019s work together more strongly than any other: humanism and respect for the existing world. Kozakiewicz is almost uniquely sensitive to human needs \u2013 every one of his projects, however utopian, is entirely focused on serving the individual, to provide him with what is perhaps too often forgotten in our soulless, technologicised world.<\/p>\n

Kozakiewicz is a Professor at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts where he runs the Interdisciplinary Design Workshop at the Faculty of Design. Kozakiewicz received prices in major architectural competitions. He received an honourable mention, for instance, in a competition for the design of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Toru\u0144 (2004) and in 2005, his entry won in international competition for the Park of Reconciliation near the Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum. One of the notable Kozakiewicz\u2019s works is was completed in 2007 Mars Project<\/em>, a massive redesign of the landscape of a former lignite-mining area near Lake Baerwalde in Germany, which takes the form of rolling landscape shaped like a giant human auricle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the first part the artist will elaborate on the projects in which he uses architecture and its language\u00a0to formulate or solve specific problems\u00a0that the artist observes in\u00a0the functioning of the human life environments, and where architecture\u00a0becomes\u00a0an artistic tool and artistic strategy.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The second\u00a0part\u00a0of the lecture the artist will present his engagement in projects researching and analyzing relationships between human beings and their environments.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The last part will\u00a0concern\u00a0the role of the body in architectural thinking\u00a0which inform many of his works and designs.<\/p>\n

He will also share thoughts on the topic of the increasing presence of excessive memory in the public space today.<\/p>\n

The Meet Over Lunch series is an ongoing invitation extended to local and visiting art practitioners to present their practice and projects over lunch to the RU community.<\/p>\n

Some of Kozakiewicz\u00b4s projects refer to the tradition of garden architecture, others to the strategy of conceptual art, land art. Kozakiewicz\u2019s quest has led him or the utopian architecture of the 1960s and 1970s. The artist creates models of conceptual and critical architecture, that are not always intended to be realized but rather to address or solve specific problems. He refers to them as diagnostic instruments designed to assess the functioning of the human living environment and the failures that arise in urban planning and construction. The inspirations for his artistic-architectural and urbanistic projects include, among other things, contemporary ecology, genetics, physics, astronomy, and ancient cosmological concepts searching for relations between microcosm and macrocosm.\n\u2018Two things bind Kozakiewicz\u2019s work together more strongly than any other: humanism and respect for the existing world. Kozakiewicz is almost uniquely sensitive to human needs \u2013 every one of his projects, however utopian, is entirely focused on serving the individual, to provide him with what is perhaps too often forgotten in our soulless, technologicised world.\nKozakiewicz is a Professor at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts where he runs the Interdisciplinary Design Workshop at the Faculty of Design. Kozakiewicz received prices in major architectural competitions. He received an honourable mention, for instance, in a competition for the design of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Toru\u0144 (2004) and in 2005, his entry won in international competition for the Park of Reconciliation near the Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum.
