Poland's groundbreaking music festival is returning to present a pioneering program even wider in scope, turning the Hearn into a sonic playground with two electrifying nights of music and technology. Drawing on more than a decade's experience in connecting sound and architecture in unique spaces in Poland, Unsound Toronto creates a journey including ambient soundscapes, noise, drone metal, pounding techno and the most contemporary fractured club music. \nCelebrating Unsound's origins and Poland's vibrant innovative music scene, Polish artists will be out in force - with Unsound Krakow resident DJ Olivia and 4-piece collective T'ien Lai using electronics, synths and drums, and clarinetist and composer Waclaw Zimpel teaming up with Lebanon's Rabih Beaini.\nFrom its roots as a small underground festival in the cellar clubs of Krakow, Poland, Unsound is an amorphous music festival that has become one of the world's foremost events in electronic and experimental music, renowned for discovering new artists and commissioning risk-taking projects. In addition to its flagship festival in Krakow, Unsound has four acclaimed North American editions under its belt and regularly takes place in London and Adelaide. This year, the festival launched its DISLOCATION project\/theme for 2016 and 2017 with events taking place in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, Batumi, Georgia and New York. \nThe Arts Partners for Unsound Toronto at Luminato Festival are Unsound Productions, the Polish Cultural Institute New York, and the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in Toronto.\nUnsound Luminato trailerSCHEDULE\nShare this event on your social media.\nMore on Polish Artists\nOlivia is a great believer in vinyl and pushing truth through mixing. She's been a key player in the Polish electronic music scene for 12 years, both solo and performing with her brother Kinzo Chrome in the duo Chrono Bross. \nOlivia's success has spread thanks to her idiosyncratic track selection and her excellent technical skills - her sets are like no one else's and no two sets are alike. Through the raw and dark edges of techno, the liquid feel of acid, the deep reaches of cosmic, the simplicity of electro and the warmth of house, her sets shine with originality and a strong belief in the sound she delivers. Now Olivia is taking a step into production and continuing her forward momentum in musical exploration. For Olivia, mixing and digging is life, a DJ's work is to shape tastes and not be distracted and diverted by fashion or trends. \nT'ien Lai was founded in 2012 by Lukasz Jedrzejczak (So Slow, Alameda 5) and Kuba Ziolek (Stara Rzeka, Innercity Ensemble) as a result of their search for new forms of meditative electronic and electro-acoustic music. The debut album Da'at, released by Monotype Records in 2013, was characterized by the sound of old Sniezka radio receivers from Communist Poland, processed through guitar effects and imposed on synthesizer loops. These adventures culminated in well-received concerts at the Unsound Festival in Krak\u00f3w (2012), and at Strefa Monotype in Warsaw (2014).\nSince the beginning of 2015, T'ien Lai has been playing as a quartet: Rafal Kolacki (Hati, Innercity Ensemble, Mammoth Ulthana) and Mikolaj Zielinski (Alameda 3, Alameda 5, Rara) have now joined the lineup on drums and percussion. Jedrzejczak and Ziolek returned to clear synthetic sounds, which contrast with the organic sounds of live percussion. The result is music spread between quasi-shamanic trans; raw, almost industrial rhythmic electronic music; and pastiches of modern techno. The quartet plays and improvises live with no computers. \nWaclaw Zimpel is the most imaginative clarinet player in Poland, recognized both in his homeland and internationally. Since the very beginnings of his musical career, his recordings and performances received many positive reviews in the press and he has been a recipient of numerous awards. The many varied projects he has lead often draw on the musical traditions of India, Japan, or Morocco, proving that he excels the most when facing a genuine challenge."},{"@type":"ImageObject","inLanguage":"pl-PL","@id":"https:\/\/instytutpolski.pl\/newyork\/2020\/04\/26\/unsound-toronto-at-luminato-festival\/#primaryimage","url":"https:\/\/instytutpolski.pl\/newyork\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/04\/Layout-Vertical-Typo.jpg","contentUrl":"https:\/\/instytutpolski.pl\/newyork\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/04\/Layout-Vertical-Typo.jpg","width":220,"height":300},{"@type":"BreadcrumbList","@id":"https:\/\/instytutpolski.pl\/newyork\/2020\/04\/26\/unsound-toronto-at-luminato-festival\/#breadcrumb","itemListElement":[{"@type":"ListItem","position":1,"name":"Home","item":"https:\/\/instytutpolski.pl\/newyork\/"},{"@type":"ListItem","position":2,"name":"Unsound Toronto at Luminato Festival"}]},{"@type":"WebSite","@id":"https:\/\/instytutpolski.pl\/newyork\/#website","url":"https:\/\/instytutpolski.pl\/newyork\/","name":"Instytut Polski w Nowym Jorku","description":"Instytuty Polskie","potentialAction":[{"@type":"SearchAction","target":{"@type":"EntryPoint","urlTemplate":"https:\/\/instytutpolski.pl\/newyork\/?s={search_term_string}"},"query-input":{"@type":"PropertyValueSpecification","valueRequired":true,"valueName":"search_term_string"}}],"inLanguage":"pl-PL"},{"@type":"Person","@id":"https:\/\/instytutpolski.pl\/newyork\/#\/schema\/person\/af43f4fa50ef5999bacb57c6c6b2be68","name":"wilczynskia","image":{"@type":"ImageObject","inLanguage":"pl-PL","@id":"https:\/\/instytutpolski.pl\/newyork\/#\/schema\/person\/image\/","url":"https:\/\/secure.gravatar.com\/avatar\/d671b9aa45c40978807d846b3a9cf28c?s=96&d=mm&r=g","contentUrl":"https:\/\/secure.gravatar.com\/avatar\/d671b9aa45c40978807d846b3a9cf28c?s=96&d=mm&r=g","caption":"wilczynskia"},"url":"https:\/\/instytutpolski.pl\/newyork\/author\/wilczynskia\/"}]}},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/instytutpolski.pl\/newyork\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1627","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/instytutpolski.pl\/newyork\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/instytutpolski.pl\/newyork\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/instytutpolski.pl\/newyork\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/128"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/instytutpolski.pl\/newyork\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=1627"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/instytutpolski.pl\/newyork\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1627\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":1629,"href":"https:\/\/instytutpolski.pl\/newyork\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1627\/revisions\/1629"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/instytutpolski.pl\/newyork\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/1628"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/instytutpolski.pl\/newyork\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=1627"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/instytutpolski.pl\/newyork\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=1627"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/instytutpolski.pl\/newyork\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=1627"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
