The presence of Polish writers in the world is contingent upon promoters of our literature in various countries. Without their passion and industry, the presence and success of Polish books across our borders would scarcely be possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The award winners are translators of Polish literature, or those who promote it \u2013 publishers, literary critics and literaturee scholars, as well as cultural animators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Transatlantyk Award was first presented on 13 May 2005 at the Juliusz S\u0142owacki Theatre in Krakow during the Congress of Translators of Polish Literature. It comes with 50 000 PLN, a commemorative diploma and a statuette by \u0141ukasz Kieferling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Winners of the Transatlantyk Award to date:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>2005 \u2013\u00a0<strong>Henryk Bereska<\/strong>\u00a0(Germany) \u2013 a Silesian translator of Polish literature into German;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2006 \u2013\u00a0<strong>Anders Bodeg\u00e5rd<\/strong>\u00a0(Sweden) \u2013 a translator and promoter of Polish literature in Sweden, well known in Poland;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2007 \u2013\u00a0<strong>Albrecht Lempp<\/strong>\u00a0(Germany) \u2013 one of the architects of Poland\u2019s success as a guest of honour at the International Book Fair in Frankfurt, and a translator of G\u0142owacki and Pilch, among others;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2008 \u2013 X<strong>enia Staroshyelska<\/strong>\u00a0(Russia) \u2013 a translator of Polish prose into Russian since the 1960s;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2009 \u2013\u00a0<strong>Biserka Raj\u010di\u0107<\/strong>\u00a0(Serbia) \u2013 a translator of Polish poets, philosophers, literary theorists, and a scholar of the Polish avant-garde;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2010 \u2013\u00a0<strong>Pietro Marchesani<\/strong>\u00a0(Italy) \u2013 a great promoter of the work of Wis\u0142awa Szymborska in Italy;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2011 \u2013\u00a0<strong>Vlasta Dvo\u0159\u00e1\u010dkov\u00e1\u00a0<\/strong>(Czechia) \u2013 a committed advocate of Polish poetry in Czechia;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2012 \u2013\u00a0<strong>Yi Lijun<\/strong>\u00a0(China) \u2013 a literary scholar, and a translator of titles including\u00a0<em>Forefathers\u2019 Eve<\/em>,\u00a0<em>The Trilogy<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>The Captive Mind<\/em>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2013 \u2013\u00a0<strong>Karol Lesman<\/strong>\u00a0(Holland) \u2013 a Witkacy expert who has translated the canon of Polish prose into Dutch;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2014 \u2013<strong>\u00a0Bill Johnston<\/strong>\u00a0(USA) \u2013 a scholar and advocate of Polish contemporary literature, as well as the classics of nineteenth-century poetry; a force behind the success of My\u015bliwski\u2019s novels in America;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2015 \u2013<strong>\u00a0Laurence Dy\u00e8vre\u00a0<\/strong>(France) \u2013 a translator with around sixty translations to her credit, mainly Polish contemporary prose, spanning the whole of the twentieth century;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2016 \u2013\u00a0<strong>Constantin Geamba\u015fu<\/strong>\u00a0(Romania) \u2013 a translator and Polish scholar, who has translated around fifty Polish books for some of Romania\u2019s most prestigious publishing houses;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2017 \u2013\u00a0<strong>Lajos P\u00e1lfalvi<\/strong>\u00a0(Hungary) \u2013 a literary historian and critic, with nearly sixty book publications to his credit \u2013 translations of Polish literature, essays, and reportage;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2018 \u2013\u00a0<strong>Antonia Lloyd-Jones<\/strong>\u00a0(Great Britain) \u2013 a translator of Polish literature into English and a great promoter of Polish culture; she has produced over a hundred translations;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2019 \u2013\u00a0<strong>Hendrik Lindepuu<\/strong>\u00a0(Estonia) \u2013 he has over fifty books to his credit, as well as seventy plays; since 2003, he has been publishing Polish literature via Hendrik Lindepuu Kirjastus;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2020 \u2013\u00a0<strong>Ewa Thompson<\/strong>\u00a0(Poland) \u2013 a promoter of Polish culture in the USA, a retired Slavic Studies professor at Rice University, where she brought up generations of Slavic scholars;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2021 \u2013\u00a0<strong>Tokimasa Sekiguchi<\/strong>\u00a0(Japan) \u2013 a promoter of Polish culture in Japan who has translated such masterpieces as Jan Kochanowski\u2019s\u00a0<em>Laments<\/em>, Adam Mickiewicz\u2019s\u00a0<em>Ballads and Romances\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>Vilnius Forefathers<\/em>\u00a0and Boles\u0142aw Prus\u2019s\u00a0<em>The Doll<\/em>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2022 \u2013\u00a0<strong>Silvano De Fanti<\/strong>\u00a0(Italy) \u2013 a translator of Polish literature into Italian and an indomitable promoter of Polish language and culture in Italy;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2023 \u2013\u00a0<strong>Hatif Janabi<\/strong>\u00a0(Iraq) \u2013 a translator of Polish literature into Arabic, with an impressive number of translations of the classics of Polish literature.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2024 \u2013\u00a0<strong>Vera Verdiani<\/strong>\u00a0(Italy) \u2013 a translator of Polish literature into Italian who has rendered Gombrowicz, Kapu\u015bci\u0144ski, Lem and Herling-Grudzi\u0144ski;<br>2024 \u2013\u00a0<strong>Abel Murcia<\/strong>\u00a0(Spain) \u2013 a promoter of Polish culture, translator and author of dictionaries. Without their passion and industry, the presence and success of Polish books across our borders would scarcely be possible.\nThe award winners are translators of Polish literature, or those who promote it \u2013 publishers, literary critics and literaturee scholars, as well as cultural animators.\nThe Transatlantyk Award was first presented on 13 May 2005 at the Juliusz S\u0142owacki Theatre in Krakow during the Congress of Translators of Polish Literature.
