Polish Cultural Institute New York<\/strong> is very pleased to share with you the 2026 ALTA mentee in the Polish language who has been selected by this year’s mentor Bill Johston<\/strong>! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are incredibly excited to support our mentee, Lucille Lorenz<\/strong>, who will be translating an interwar-period Polish novel. She was selected by the Polish-language mentor in recognition of her demonstrated promise as an emerging translator, chosen from a highly competitive pool of applicants to this year\u2019s program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We would like to thank all applicants for taking part in this year’s selection and congratulate Lucille Lorenz<\/strong> for being chosen as 2026 ALTA Emerging Translator Mentee in Polish. Over the course of this year, she will be working under the mentorship of Bill Johnston, an Academic and a seasoned American Translator of Polish Literature, recipient of many awards for his outstanding achievements in the field, including Found in Translation Award<\/a><\/strong> attributed yearly jointly by the Polish Book Institute in Warsaw<\/strong>, the Polish Cultural Institute London<\/strong> and the Polish Cultural Institute New York<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Polish Cultural Institute New York<\/strong> partnered once again this year with American Literary Translators Association (ALTA)<\/a> <\/strong>on their staple Emerging Translator Mentorship Program with seven other partners supporting translation from their national languages into English. The mentorships are offered by ALTA in partnership with the Literature Translation Institute of Korea<\/a>, the Polish Cultural Institute New York<\/a>, the Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Global<\/a>, the South Asian Literature in Translation (SALT) Project<\/a>, the Swedish Arts Council<\/a>, the Taiwan Academy of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Los Angeles<\/a>, <\/strong>and the Yanai Initiative<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ALTA Emerging Translator Mentorship Program<\/strong> is designed to establish and facilitate a close working relationship between an experienced translator and an emerging translator on a project selected by the emerging translator. The mentorship duration is one year. The emerging translator is expected to choose a project that can be completed in that time, and they will only be advised on that particular project. ALTA\u2019s Emerging Translator Mentorship Program was founded by former ALTA Board member Allison M. Charette. Since its inception, the program has supported 54 translators working from 18 languages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lucille Lorenz<\/strong> is currently a fourth-year undergraduate at the University of California, Berkeley where she will complete a double major in Comparative Literature and English in May 2026. She is deeply interested in the study of language and the art of translation. At Berkeley, she has served as the Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Comparative Literature Department\u2019s creative writing journal, Vagabond Multilingual Journal<\/em>, as well as their academic journal, The Comparative Literature Undergraduate Journal<\/em>. In 2025, she was the Co-Chair of the Comparative Literature Department\u2019s 12th annual Undergraduate Symposium, and themed the event around mimesis and translation, titling the event, \u201cTranslating Reality.\u201d She also is a staff writer for UC Berkeley\u2019s Arts and Humanities Division Dean\u2019s Office, where she writes an interview column called, \u201cWhat is Humanities Research?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In her academic work, her interests center psychoanalysis, reception theory, and translation studies. Her current senior thesis focuses on representations of Ancient Roman literature and Latin language pedagogy in a comparative reading of Giovanni Gentile\u2019s The Reform of Education<\/em> and Witold Gombrowicz\u2019s Ferdydurke<\/em>. In addition to academic writing, she is very passionate about both translation and long-form journalism, and hopes to allow these interests to flourish during her graduate studies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She is extremely thrilled to work under the guidance of Dr. Bill Johnston while translating her first book-length project. She is incredibly grateful to Dr. Johnston, The American Literary Translators Association, and the Polish Cultural Institute of New York for making this a possibility for her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bill Johnston<\/strong>\u2019s ( ALTA 2024 mentor) awards include the 2019 National Translation Award in Poetry for Adam Mickiewicz\u2019s verse narrative Pan Tadeusz<\/em> (Archipelago Books), a translation supported by a Guggenheim Fellowship; the 2017 Found in Translation Award for Tomasz R\u00f3\u017cycki\u2019s mock epic poem Twelve Stations<\/em> (Zephyr Press); the 2014 Transatlantyk Prize; and the 2012 PEN Translation Prize and Best Translated Book Award, both for Wies\u0142aw My\u015bliwski\u2019s novel Stone Upon Stone<\/em> (Archipelago Books). He has twice been on the faculty at the Bread Loaf Translators Conference, and has previously served five times as mentor for the ALTA mentorships. The American Literary Translators Association (ALTA)<\/a> <\/strong>is a nonprofit arts membership association that provides resources, community, and professional affiliation to its members: individual translators, academic institutions, presses, and others working in literary translation. The annual ALTA conference, held in a different location each year, is the largest gathering of literary translators in the United States, and the only one of its kind. It brings together nearly 500 translators, writers, and editors for an intimate, intense, three-day conversation through panels, workshops, roundtables, and on- and off-site bilingual readings. The ALTA conference is structured around the creation of high-quality art. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

ALTA administers awards to recognize excellence in translation and provides fellowships and mentorships to support emerging translators. Six major prizes are awarded at the annual conference: the National Translation Awards in Poetry and Prose, the Lucien Stryk Asian Translation Prize, the Italian Prose in Translation Award (IPTA), and the Spain-USA Foundation Translation Award (SUFTA). We offer ALTA Travel Fellowships for emerging translators to attend the conference, including the Peter K. Jansen Memorial Travel Fellowship for an emerging translator of color or a translator working from an underrepresented diaspora or stateless language. ALTA’s Emerging Translator Mentorship Program allows an emerging translator (someone who has published no more than one full-length work of translation) to begin a career as a literary translator with a more seasoned translator by their side, as they create a literary translation of high caliber<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She was selected by the Polish-language mentor in recognition of her demonstrated promise as an emerging translator, chosen from a highly competitive pool of applicants to this year\u2019s program.\nWe would like to thank all applicants for taking part in this year's selection and congratulate Lucille Lorenz for being chosen as 2026 ALTA Emerging Translator Mentee in Polish. Over the course of this year, she will be working under the mentorship of Bill Johnston, an Academic and a seasoned American Translator of Polish Literature, recipient of many awards for his outstanding achievements in the field, including Found in Translation Award attributed yearly jointly by the Polish Book Institute in Warsaw, the Polish Cultural Institute London and the Polish Cultural Institute New York.\nThe Polish Cultural Institute New York partnered once again this year with American Literary Translators Association (ALTA) on their staple Emerging Translator Mentorship Program with seven other partners supporting translation from their national languages into English. The mentorships are offered by ALTA in partnership with the Literature Translation Institute of Korea, the Polish Cultural Institute New York, the Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Global, the South Asian Literature in Translation (SALT) Project, the Swedish Arts Council, the Taiwan Academy of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Los Angeles, and the Yanai Initiative.\nThe ALTA Emerging Translator Mentorship Program is designed to establish and facilitate a close working relationship between an experienced translator and an emerging translator on a project selected by the emerging translator. The mentorship duration is one year. The emerging translator is expected to choose a project that can be completed in that time, and they will only be advised on that particular project. ALTA\u2019s Emerging Translator Mentorship Program was founded by former ALTA Board member Allison M. Charette. Since its inception, the program has supported 54 translators working from 18 languages.\nLucille Lorenz is currently a fourth-year undergraduate at the University of California, Berkeley where she will complete a double major in Comparative Literature and English in May 2026. She is deeply interested in the study of language and the art of translation. At Berkeley, she has served as the Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Comparative Literature Department\u2019s creative writing journal, Vagabond Multilingual Journal, as well as their academic journal, The Comparative Literature Undergraduate Journal. In 2025, she was the Co-Chair of the Comparative Literature Department\u2019s 12th annual Undergraduate Symposium, and themed the event around mimesis and translation, titling the event, \u201cTranslating Reality.\u201d She also is a staff writer for UC Berkeley\u2019s Arts and Humanities Division Dean\u2019s Office, where she writes an interview column called, \u201cWhat is Humanities Research?\u201d\nIn her academic work, her interests center psychoanalysis, reception theory, and translation studies. Her current senior thesis focuses on representations of Ancient Roman literature and Latin language pedagogy in a comparative reading of Giovanni Gentile\u2019s The Reform of Education and Witold Gombrowicz\u2019s Ferdydurke. In addition to academic writing, she is very passionate about both translation and long-form journalism, and hopes to allow these interests to flourish during her graduate studies.\nShe is extremely thrilled to work under the guidance of Dr. Bill Johnston while translating her first book-length project. The annual ALTA conference, held in a different location each year, is the largest gathering of literary translators in the United States, and the only one of its kind. It brings together nearly 500 translators, writers, and editors for an intimate, intense, three-day conversation through panels, workshops, roundtables, and on- and off-site bilingual readings. The ALTA conference is structured around the creation of high-quality art. \nALTA administers awards to recognize excellence in translation and provides fellowships and mentorships to support emerging translators.
