ECOLOGISTS AND PACIFISTS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the 1980s, ecology and pacifism have been added to the topics of freedom of speech and democracy. The reason for this was the poor state of the environment, affected by heavy industry, which was favored in the socialist economy, and the image of the army and police as repressive forces of a totalitarian state fighting against its own citizens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Chernobyl disaster inspired Polish-Czechoslovak protests against the construction of nuclear power plants in Stonava, Temel\u00edn, and \u017barnowiec. People did not believe that they would be safe and that the reactors would only be used for civilian purposes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pacifist slogans were promoted by the Polish organization Freedom and Peace (Wolno\u015b\u0107 i Pok\u00f3j), whose members included Ma\u0142gorzata Tarasiewicz and Agnieszka Romaszewska-Guzy, and by the Czechoslovak Independent Peace Association \u2013 Initiative for the Demilitarization of Society, co-founded by Hana Marvanov\u00e1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

M\u00e1ria Filkov\u00e1, Gabriela Kalisk\u00e1, Judita Kokolevsk\u00e1, Zora Ok\u00e1liov\u00e1-Pauliniov\u00e1, Jana Vi\u0161v\u00e1derov\u00e1, and Hana Volkov\u00e1 were among the authors of the 1987 publication Bratislava\/Out Loud, which contained critical texts on the state of the environment and life in Bratislava in general. It also proposed solutions and pointed out the inaction of the state, serving as an indictment of the regime. V\u00e1clav Havel called it the Slovak equivalent of Charter 77.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anna Zemanov\u00e1: „We enjoyed being together, knowing that we were leaving something visible and useful behind, finding ways to express our resistance against the ruling system in a way that our peers and those around us could follow. We sought new ways to invite even strangers to share our values. We were not discouraged by hard work, discomfort, or failures.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

From 17 to 23 March 1986, women staged a hunger strike in Podkowa Le\u015bna demanding the release of other members of the Freedom and Peace organization. Ma\u0142gorzata \u015awier\u017cewska and Barbara Malak participated in the protest as spokespersons, along with Magda Kowalczyk, Anna Gawlik, Zuzanna D\u0105browska, Joanna Radecka, Marzena Trojanowska, Janina Wronko, Ma\u0142gorzata Krukowska and Ma\u0142gorzata Gorczewska.

On 29 May 1989, the only demonstration in Czechoslovakia organized solely by women took place as part of the Prague Mothers environmental movement, co-founded by Jarmila Johnov\u00e1 and Rut Kol\u00ednsk\u00e1. They collected signatures for a petition demanding information from the government about the state of the environment. Environmentalist Zora „Kalka” Pauliniov\u00e1 was one of the main organizers of volunteer brigades to save the \u010ciernohronsk\u00e1 Railway. She co-organized camps, lectures, and events, many of which also involved the Czech Brontosaurus movement.
