Outstanding reviews, full audiences: theatrical adaptation of Olga Tokarczuk’s novel in Tel Aviv

The play "Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead" is a production rich in thought, emotion, and poetry, free from didacticism and moralizing — writes Haaretz, one of Israel’s leading newspapers. The stage adaptation of Olga Tokarczuk’s novel returned to the repertoire of Tel Aviv’s Tmuna Theatre in October.

The Haaretz reviewer highlights the universal nature of the production. In the review, they write:

On the Bones of the Dead” is a performance of universal scope, transcending time and space. It combines reflection on humanity’s relationship with nature with a critique of power structures, religion, and patriarchal social order. Without moralizing or dogmatism, the creators convey their message through vivid, contradictory characters, using subtle humor and irony.

The author also praises the “remarkably natural and authentic” performance of Naomi Yoeli, who plays Janina Duszejko — the main character from the Polish Nobel laureate’s novel — as well as the other actors, who “form a perfectly synchronized and precise ensemble”. The critic also commends the stage design and the symbolic gesture that concludes the performance.

The stage adaptation of Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead by Olga Tokarczuk is based on the Hebrew translation of the novel by Miriam Borenstein. The adaptation and direction are by Yotam Gotal, who also appears on stage. The play, which premiered on November 23, 2024, was produced with the support of the Polish Institute in Tel Aviv and the Adam Mickiewicz Institute.
