An exciting collaboration, Polish in its origins but most Israeli there is, created the local version of “pączek”- a doughnut that does not need fireworks and confetti, does not require tall towers and floors of an extroverted impression. Like that, as it is, perfect! This Hanukkah miracle is the product of the connection between Amita pastry house in Tel Aviv and the Polish Institute, the institution that aims to present to Israelis the rich mosaic of Poland. And culture is also doughnuts, of course, as they are.

The pączek, an everyday Polish hit that doesn’t need a special holiday to heat the oil, was happily performed by Michal Bouton and Anna Shapiro from Amita, and made them reconnect, and in the most fun way possible, with the craziness of the Hanukkah holiday. “We’ve always kind of run away from Hanukkah,” Bouton admitted, “and over the years we’ve managed to build our own place within Israel’s donut festival. To preserve and respect the tradition and the classics, but without compromising on what’s important to us – the taste, and the way.”

This taste, and especially this way, attracted the Polish Institute to Amita, and its feminine perspective closed everything into a real doughnut hug – doughnuts filled with rose jam and glazed with white fondant with candied orange decorations, which Polish grandmothers and Israeli bakers gather around the same frying pan. Together.

“It’s a lovely doughnut, small-big, classic in appearance but deep-tasting, and brings you back for more and more. Exactly what we like to eat and exactly what we like to make” Bouton said, “roses are a wonderful ingredient, and we celebrated with them. The whole kitchen was filled with flowers and it’s a very fun smell that whispers to the field strawberries and fruits we work with on a regular basis. The ability to stay in the more modest place of Hanukkah and yet provide such an impression really turned us on.”

The Polish-style doughnut can be found at the two Amita pastry houses in Tel Aviv:

An-sky and is considered a pinnacle of Yiddish cinema and German Expressionism. Produced in 1937, tells the story of a young bride possessed by a dybbuk (a malicious spirit) and depicts the traditional folklore and culture of Polish Jews before World War II.

An old woman lives in a remote village, overlooking the constellations above and the Czech mountains beyond. But the peace of the village is disturbed by a horrific wave of murders: one after the other, the bodies of the members of the community are found, all men of status. The main protagonists, an amateur astrologer and Blake translator, takes it upon herself to investigate the mysterious murders. Humor, horror and music. All this in attempt to stage the novel by Olga Tokarczuk – the Polish Nobel laureate.

The exhibition, which was created by the Marek Edelman Dialogue Center in Łódź, arrived to Israel thanks to the cooperation of the Polish Institute in Tel Aviv with the Multidisciplinary Unit for Polish Studies and the Library of the University of Haifa.

The opening of the exhibition in Beer Sheva will take place on Monday, December 5 at 5:30 P.M. at the Beer Sheva Municipal Library and will be available to the public until December 22.

Address: 12, Ha’Meshahrerim St., Beer Sheva

Entrance free of charge

5:30 P.M. – gathering

6:00 P.M. – opening remarks by the Representative of the Polish Institute in Tel Aviv, Mr. Moti Sade – Chairman of the Exhibitions Committee and Mr. Yair Nagid – CEO of the Israeli Symphonette in Beer Sheva and the Head of the Cultural Department

Fragments from the album “Artur Szyk – Pole, Jew, Lodzener” written and published by Marek Edelman Dialogue Center in Łódź:

“I am a Jew and Poland is my homeland. I cannot separate one from the other in my heart”. (Artur Szyk)

“Wherever I am, I will always work and, above all, for Poland”. (Artur Szyk)

“As a Pole, I reserve the rights to my works for my country before other countries”. (Artur Szyk)

To us, the Employees of the Marek Edelman Dialogue Center in Łódź, Artur Szyk’s works help talk about the history of Poland, Europe and the world, but also about tolerance, social injustice, multiculturalism and empathy.

Artur Szyk (1894 – 1951) – author of miniatures, illuminated books and excellent caricatures, is one of the most interesting artists of the 20th century. His uniqueness is separate, yet deeply embedded in culture. In his most important works – “The Statute of Kalisz” and “The Haggadah” – he referred to the works of medieval masters, but spoke his own modern language. His anti-fascist caricatures were also recognizable, through which he waged – as he himself emphasized – a personal war against Hitler. Artur Szyk’s works can be found in the most important libraries and museums in the world, but the artist remains a little-known figure, even in his hometown of Łódź. Poles still know little about him, although we should talk about him and proudly show his work to the whole world.

Bruno Schulz was one of the most influential and best known Polish-Jewish writers in world literature. Prominent Israeli creators openly acknowledge his influence on their artistic work and even included him as a character in their works. In Poland and other countries he is considered one of the greatest authors. One can say with a smile that Bruno Schulz is the least known famous Jewish writer in Israel. His work is fascinating, magical and unique.

During the performance we will have a taste of Schulz by actors, and we will also hear about his special character, his bold paintings and his life until he was murdered by a Nazi in World War II.
