Polish Oscar Entry “Under the Volcano” screens at Habitat International Film Festival

The Polish drama film “Under the Volcano”, directed by Damian Kocur, was screened on 28th of March at the Stein Auditorium, India Habitat Centre, as part of the 6th Habitat International Film Festival. The screening was graced by the presence of H.E. Piotr Świtalski, Head of the Polish Mission, who introduced the film. The film, Poland’s official entry for the Oscars, captivated audiences with its poignant narrative and striking cinematography.

Set against the breathtaking backdrop of Tenerife, the largest of Spain’s Canary Islands, Under the Volcano follows a Ukrainian family whose peaceful holiday is upended overnight, forcing them into the harrowing reality of becoming refugees.

In a powerful reflection of contemporary displacement, the film resonates deeply with themes that have long defined Polish cinema—identity, survival, and the trauma of forced migration.

With “Under the Volcano”, Damian Kocur continues Poland’s cinematic tradition of intertwining individual human struggles with broader socio-political realities. He delivers a film that is both timely and timeless—a searing meditation on loss, resilience, and the search for home in an increasingly unstable world.
