This year, the Mill Valley Film Festival celebrates its 40th anniversary with an amazing lineup of movies, including tributes to Kristin Scott Thomas, Sean Penn, Oscar winner Holly Hunter and director Todd Haynes. Each year, the 11-day festival welcomes more than 200 filmmakers and 60,000 attendees from around the world. Festival categories include the Official Premiere Selection, World Cinema, US Cinema, Valley of the Docs, Childrens FilmFest, 5@5 (daily shorts programs) and Active Cinema. Screen International has named Mill Valley Film Festival a Top 10 US film festival.
This year the festival will feature a Focus on Poland program, with Polish productions such as Agnieszka Holland‘s latest film, Spoor (based on a novel by Olga Tokarczuk and this years Polish submission to the Oscars), The Sandglass by Wojciech Has (this screening will include an introduction and book signing by Annette Insdorf, author of Intimations: The Cinema of Wojciech Has), Loving Vincent, an animated story of Vincent van Gogh by Dorota Kobiela and Hugh Welchman, and in the Under the Radar section we will see a live performance by Poland’s leading contemporary animator, Mariusz Wilczynski, accompanied by live music by Trance Mission and with a mini retrospective of Wilczynski’s work. Also shown will be animations by other artists like Walerian Borowczyk,Jan Lenica, Ryszard Czekala, Zbigniew Rybczynski, Tomek Baginski and Renata Gasiorowska.
The animation program presented at the Mill Valley Film Festival is a part of a bigger presentation of Polish animation organized by the Polish Cultural Institute, the Polish Film Institute and the FINA. It is inspired by the 70 Years of Polish Animation DVD box set published by the PFI earlier this year. Screenings will take place at the Pacific Film Archives in Berkeley, Anthology Film Archives in New York, NorthWest Film Forum in Seattle, Austin Film Society, Cleveland Cinematheque, Gene Siskel Film Center in Chicago, Real ArtWays in Hartford, and Vancouver Cinematheque .
