About the Project

„Who Are You? Polish Illustration for Children in New York” is a project dedicated to the Polish community in the United States. It showcases outstanding contemporary Polish illustrators who are appreciated not only in their homeland but are also gaining recognition worldwide.
The project activities focus on Polish culture, nature, traditions, and scientific achievements, presenting inspiring artistic phenomena and significant social dilemmas, ultimately emphasizing the importance of equality and the value of societal complexity.

A kaleidoscope of events: the „Who Are You?” exhibition, exploring the importance of roots, an opening with a family workshop, curator-led tours, lectures for teachers, and artistic workshops for children related to Polish culture aims to inspire interest in contemporary Poland—a modern yet history-conscious, dynamic yet reflective country.
A Poland that invites exploration and has a chance to leave a lasting impression.

All these activities will take place in New York in collaboration with the partner—The Nowodworski Foundation, an American Polish community foundation.

Exhibition

The exhibition „Who Are You? The Importance of Roots” is based on a display created to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Poland’s independence, which has been shown in several renowned Polish cultural institutions, including the International Cultural Centre in Krakow, the Pan Tadeusz Museum in Wrocław, and the Palace of Culture Gallery in Dąbrowa Górnicza. Now, in its new bilingual version, it is presented to the Polish-American community in New York.

This intergenerational, dialogue-based exhibition project poses questions about what Poland is, what homeland, independence, patriotism, life in a free country, national identity, and heritage mean. The exhibition discusses national symbols, the Polish language, history and culture, as well as regional traditions and outstanding inspiring Poles such as Nicolaus Copernicus and Maria Skłodowska-Curie.

Despite the significance of the topics, the exhibition’s narrative remains light and engaging, opening up opportunities to transmit and nurture native traditions in the context of life outside the homeland. The themes are presented through works by prominent Polish illustrators and are accompanied by a printed guide with activities for children.

The exhibition features works by: Agata Dudek, Emilia Dziubak, Joanna Gębal, Nika Jaworowska-Duchlińska, Przemysław Liput, Aleksandra and Daniel Mizielińscy, Marianna Oklejak, Ewa Kozyra-Pawlak and Paweł Pawlak, Joanna Rusinek, Tomasz Samojlik, Marianna Sztyma, Katarzyna Walentynowicz, Elżbieta Wasiuczyńska, Józef Wilkoń.
