THE ONLY POLISH ART GALLERY ZAK | BRANICKA

AT THE ARMORY SHOW 2018

Pier 94, Booth 732
711 12th Avenue at 55th Street, New York City

The Armory Show, the premiere New York City art fair is a leading cultural destination for discovering and collecting the world’s most important 20th- and 21st-century art. This year ZAK | BRANICKA Polish gallery based in Berlin will be showcased for the first time in the roster of international art galleries, and will feature work of Marlena Kudlicka, a fresh and bold approach to the form and aesthetic of the early 20th century avant-garde constructivism.

The forerunner of Polish avant-garde art, Marlena Kudlicka (born in Tomaszów Lubelski, Poland) will exhibit a continuation of her series Elements of Peaceful Engagement, which will consists of a large-scale sculpture made of both steel and glass and a series of small wall sculptures. Kudlicka derives her sculptures from systems found in architecture and construction processes in an innovative way, investigating the relationship between precision and error. Her sculptures are made with a jeweler’s precision, but at the same time an error is factored into the process of their creation. This relationship leads to a balance—the main theme of her works. As a woman, inscribed within the specificity of Polish art, Kudlicka’s artistic identity underlines the history of the invisibility of the female presence in the construction of the teleological and phallocentric narratives of yet unwritten art history of the early 20th century constructivist avant-gardes. Kudlicka currently lives and works in Berlin.

Named by New York Times, “a top draw for the heavy-lifting collectors, gallerists, celebrities, and art lovers,” The Armory Show was founded in 1994 by four NYC gallerists, Colin de Land, Pat Hearn, Matthew Marks and Paul Morris. For the last 24 years has served as a nexus for the art world, inspiring dialogue, discovery and patronage in the visual arts welcoming annually over 65,000 visitors.

ZAK | BRANICKA gallery in Berlin is a part of the ZAK | BRANICKA Foundation based in Krakow, and is led by Monika Branicka- a critic and historian, and Asia Zak- an artist. As the present-day art discourse shifts focus eastwards, ZAK | BRANICKA gallery stands at the helm of an exciting exploration investigating contemporary Eastern European art, and is dedicated to the integration of primarily Polish and other Eastern European artists into the international art context. To other renowned Polish artists represented by the gallery include Katarzyna Kozyra, Agnieszka Polska, and Józef Robakowski.
