This 90-minute documentary highlights the extraordinary life and legacy of the pianist and teacher Mieczysław Munz. The film includes archival footage, programs, letters, photos, rare Nazi documentation, and interviews with Ann Schein, Emanuel Ax, Donald Manildi, Anli Lin Tong, Jeffrey Marcus, and others.
Pianist Mieczyslaw Munz (1900-1976) was an acclaimed concert artist and teacher. His life, however, was tragically intertwined with some of the most famous people and events of the twentieth century. A true story of sacrifice, dedication and ultimate triumph over tragedy, Munz: A Pianist’s Story offers an appealing and accessible insight into the classical pianist’s world and demonstrates the important legacy a teacher can leave for generations.
“For all of the tragic twists and turns that Mieczysław Munz (1900-1976) endured throughout his life and career, his reputation as a keyboard luminary and pedagogue looms larger than ever through this remarkable documentary. Loving care and scrupulous detail inform this film’s narrative trajectory which not only brings Munz to life, but also provides a window how one negotiated the classical music business’ mechanisms in early 20th-century America.” – Jed Distler, composer/pianist, radio host, and writer
