During the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing the Polish Institute has organized graphic exhibition “Interpretations of Winter Olympic Disciplines” by Piotr Szulkowski, which was displayed on the fence of the Polish Embassy.
Ph.D. Piotr Szulkowski (born 1971) associated with the Faculty of Graphic Arts of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. The artist specializes in graphic design and bas-relief. Szulkowski presents his works at individual exhibitions and participates in group exhibitions in Poland and abroad.
In the exhibition the artist tries to approach the portrayal of human movement in sports competitions. The author wants to show what might not be easily spotted by the viewer. The sports arena becomes a place where, apart from the athletes’ struggles and rivalry, a number of emotions arise: joy, anger, sadness, agility, heaviness, lightness. The exhibition depicts the ten Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics disciplines in which Polish athletes compete. The technique the artist used to create the works is a combination of serigraphy and digital print.
“[Through the exhibition] I aim to show the movement, shape, the human being, landscape, as well as some characteristics of Chinese art with my artistic sensitivity. My most important mean of artistic expression is a drawing or a line. When creating a symbol – a logo of a sports discipline – I create a drawing. Then I arrange the pattern with watercolors. My goal is to juxtaposition winter sports with the spirit and cultural richness of China. I hope these artworks will reflect the atmosphere of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics to some extent.“
