Stefan Gierowski’s exhibition in Beijing

The Art Museum of the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing will host the first retrospective of Stefan Gierowski’s paintings in China from July 10 to September 1, 2024.

The artist sixty-year creative output is reviewed in the exhibition “That’s Where the Light Comes In: The Art of Stefan Gierowski (1957-2022)”.

Stefan Gierowski (1925–2022) is regarded a classic of Polish modernity. This outstanding representative of the avant-garde in modern painting has created a unique abstract style that emphasizes color perceptions. Figurative painting served as his initial inspiration, followed by op art and geometric abstraction. Philip Dodd, the exhibition curator in Beijing, also highlights the painter’s inspirations with Chinese art, including the texts of Laotius, the founder of Taoist philosophy.

The statement made by Jin Jun, the director of the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) Art Museum, further demonstrates the exhibition’s artistic significance: ” A homage to the artistic achievements of Stefan Gierowski, this retrospective in China also marks a milestone in cultural exchange between China and Poland.”

Exhibition organized by CAFA Art Museum and Stefan Gierowski Foundation was also supported by the Polish Institute in Beijing.

This is another Polish artist’s exhibition that CAFA Art Museum has organized, the space of which – like the building of the Manghhaa Museum of Japanese Art and Technology in Krakow – was designed by the same architect, Arata Isozaki.
