The opening of I SEE YOU, a photography exhibition by Polish cinematographer and visual artist Artur Żurawski, brought together artists, photographers and friends of the Polish Institute and Anant Art Gallery for an evening devoted to photography and the people behind cinema.
The evening began with welcoming remarks by Darpana Kapoor, Director of Anant Art Gallery, and Meera Menzes, Director of the Anant Foundation. They were followed by addresses from Dr Piotr Antoni Świtalski, Head of Mission of the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in New Delhi, and Małgorzata Wejsis-Gołębiak, Director of the Polish Institute.
At the centre of I SEE YOU are black-and-white portraits of directors, actors, crew members and local collaborators encountered during Żurawski’s film productions. Taken across Europe and Asia, the photographs draw attention to the people who usually remain behind the scenes — the many individuals whose work and relationships are an essential part of filmmaking.
The title I SEE YOU captures the idea at the heart of the exhibition: seeing someone is more than simply looking. It is an act of recognition — of acknowledging another person’s presence, individuality and story.
The Polish Institute in New Delhi was delighted to support a special Cinematography Masterclass with Artur Żurawski on 24th of Augustat AJK Mass Communication Research Centre, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi. Prof. Sabeena Gadihoke, Director, AJK MCRC, felicitated Mr. Żurawski and Ms. Malgorzata Wejsis-Gołębiak, Director, Polish Institute in New Delhi on the occasion.
The day brought together the students and the practitioner for an engaging masterclass exploring visual storytelling and the craft of cinematography. The programme concluded with a hands-on lighting workshop, giving students the opportunity to learn directly from an accomplished Director of Photography.
Artur Żurawski (b. 1972, Szczecin, Poland) is a Polish cinematographer and visual artist based in Warsaw. A graduate of the Polish National Film School in Łódź (2000), he is a member of the Polish Society of Cinematographers (PSC) and the Polish Filmmakers Association. His career spans features, television, documentaries, and international co-productions across Europe and Asia. Beginning in photography as a teen, Żurawski entered the film industry in 1995. He maintains an ongoing daily photography practice, notably “Project Z” (started in 2001). His diverse cinematography credits include internationally acclaimed feature films such as Mardaani (2014), Sultan (2016), Bhoomi (2017), Lokatorka (2021), Where Would You Like to Go? (2023), Idź pod prąd (2024), and Mardaani 3 (2026). His honours include Filmfare Award nominations for Mardaani and Golden Lion recognition at the Polish Film Festival for Idź pod prąd. Alongside his camera work, Żurawski has mentored at institutions like the Asian Film Academy and AMA Film Academy, and evaluates cinematic restoration for the Polish Film Institute. He is celebrated for merging strong visual compositions with an instinctive, character-driven narrative approach.
