Maria Pomianowska and Sutari at the Folk Alliance International Conference
Westin Crown Center
1E Pershing Rd
Kansas City, MO 64108
Wednesday, February 17, 2016 – Sunday, February 21, 2016
Leading Polish women musicians: Maria Pomianowska and music trio Sutari will take part in the Folk Alliance International Conference, the worlds largest gathering of Folk music industry and community across a diverse array of genres. The annual February conference, now in its 28th year, draws over 2,500 artists and industry participants (agents, managers, publishers, labels, festival/venue presenters, promoters, and media) dedicated to folk music.
Multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, composer and professor at the Academy of Music in Kraków, Maria Pomianowska is the artistic director of the Cross Culture Festival in Warsaw and has toured and performed all over the world. She has personally reconstructed two forgotten Polish instruments, the suka from Bilgoraj and fiddle from Plock which she will present during the showcase and the panel “Rediscovery of Polish Instruments.” Maria Pomianowska will also present an overview of Polish music and the continued presence of the folk tradition.
Sutari is the brain-child of three young women: singers, instrumentalists and performers, each from different musical and theatrical backgrounds, coming together to continue the tradition of singing Polish folk music. They play violins, basetla and drums, and also explore the musical potential of everyday objects such as hand mixers, graters, bottles and wrenches: a kitchen avant-garde. Their compositions are based on Polish and Lithuanian folk songs. They are particularly inspired by the sound and character of the LithuanianSutartines, sung only by women in perfect harmony.
