Joanna Borkowska in RU Exhibition: mono no aware
November 16 -27, 2018
Realty Collective | 351 Van Brunt St, Brooklyn, NY 11231
Hours: Wednesday-Friday, 12-6pm
Curated by Eric Sutphin in association with Residency Unlimited (RU) exhibit mono no aware features four artists, Oneika Russell (Jamaica), Meggy Rustamova (Belgium),Émilie Régnier (Canada) and Joanna Borkowska (Poland). Through the variety of mediums, the works presented reflect on ideas relating to a mystic nature of “being” as a philosophical category in phenomenology, and “awareness of things” based on a phrase of an eighteenth century Japanese literary scholar, Motoori Norinaga.
Joanna Borkowska is a contemporary abstract oil painter whose works explore processes reflected in nature and science, from the molecular to the cosmic, with all its forces and processes. By deploying modest painterly strategies including the splatter, the stain and the drip, Borkowska arrives at form that reads at first as a monochrome, to then reveal a tightly woven nexus of vibrant textures in paint that resemble a constellation of stars, a cluster of cells or a flock of distant birds. Borkowska is currently participating in Residency Unlimited in Brooklyn, NY. In mono no aware Borkowska showcases works which she has conceived of during the residency program, one large format painting from the Resonance series (2018), and a smaller painting from the Waves series (2018). Her selected exhibitions are a solo show, On the Edge, at the Le Guern Gallery in Warsaw, Poland and an Art Omi Artist Residency in Ghent, NY.
