The Polish Slavic Center invites audiences of all ages to a very special evening: “A Hundred Comforts. Portrait of A Woman” – the concert with the poetry of Wislawa Szymborska reimagined as beautiful songs by two Polish musicians-vocalists: Karolina Beimcik and Joanna Kucharczyk.
About the Project
“A Hundred Comforts – Portrait of a Woman” is a project created by two Polish artists: Karolina Beimcik and Joanna Kucharczyk. It is dedicated to Wisława Szymborska, a Polish female poet who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1996.
The music was composed to selected poems by the Nobel Prize winner with the hope that it will open the listener to what is most characteristic of her poetry: the imagination, melancholic humor, irony, and the dialectics of chance and necessity.
About the Artists
Karolina Beimcik was born in Poznań, Poland. She is trained as a classical violinist and jazz singer, drawing from many other influences, including Polish and Ukrainian folk music and poetry. She curated many musical projects under the patronage of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage: ‘Zorya’ – an international project that promotes Polish music culture in New York and ‘Komeda. Stories Crafted With Sounds, “Little Ethnologist”. Her awards and accolades include the Second Prize at the New Tradition Festival with the project “Babooshki”, Grand Prix at The Niemen Non-Stop Festival, Polish Television Special Prize, Marshall of Pomerania Prize, Second Prize at The International Jazz Singers Competition in Zamość.
Joanna Kucharczyk is an award-winning pianist, composer and singer. She received her Master of Music from Karol Szymanowski Academy and Bachelor of Music at the Fryderyk Chopin Music University in Warsaw, Poland and continued her education at Danish National Academy of Music. Joanna recently received 2nd prize at the prestigious “Translantyk Film Festival” in the Instant Composer Contest in Lodz, Poland. She has performed her music at numerous concerts and festivals in USA, South Korea, Denmark, Germany, Poland, Spain, Slovakia, Estonia, Latvia and Czech Republic.
The Consulate General of the Republic of Poland is a honorary patron of this event.
