In the early morning hours of 10 April 2010, a special Tu-154M plane crashed near Smolensk, with Polish President Lech Kaczyński and First Lady Maria Kaczyńska on board, killing all 96 passengers – top state officials, military commanders, and the plane crew.

78th anniversary of Soviet aggression on Poland
On September 17, 1939, in a direct breach of the Polish-Soviet Non-Aggression Pact, the Red Army entered the territory of the Republic of Poland. In doing so, the Soviet aggression implemented agreements made in the secret protocol of the Hitler-Stalin Pact, which dealt with the partition of territories or the regulation of the independence of Poland and other sovereign states in Central and Eastern Europe: Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Finland and Romania.

78th anniversary of the outbreak of World War II
The Second World War began on September 1, 1939 with the German attack on Poland. German aggression was compounded on September 17 when the Soviet Army joined the war, attacking Poland from the east. The defensive war lasted until October 6, 1939, when the Polish Army’s regular battles with the aggressors ended.

New Polish inscription on UNESCO World Heritage List
The 41st Session of the World Heritage Committee in Krakow has decided to inscribe Poland's historic lead, silver and zinc mine at Tarnowskie Gory together with its underground water management system on UNESCO's World Heritage List.
