Silesian String Quartet at The Morgan Library & Museum

Join us for a riveting performance by the award-winning Silesian Quartet at The Morgan Library & Museum on TuesdayNovember 6 at 7:30 pm

In celebration of the Centennial of Poland regaining its independence, the legendary Silesian String Quartet performs works by some of Poland’s most important modern composers including Karol SzymanowskiWitold LutoslawskiGrazyna Bacewicz, and Krzysztof Penderecki.

Founded in 1978, the Silesian Quartet is one of Poland’s leading chamber music ensembles. In its early years, its members developed their abilities under the supervision of musicians from such quartets as LaSalle, Amadeus, Juilliard, Smetana and Alban Berg. The Silesian Quartet performs renowned chamber music masterpieces and contemporary music, and enjoys international acclaim, giving concerts throughout Europe as well as in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Japan, China, and South Korea. It has performed in such famous venues as the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, the Viennese Konzerthaus, Schauspielhaus in Berlin, Salle Pleyel in Paris, Carnegie Hall in New York, the Hoam Art Hall in Seoul, and the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City. 

The Quartet’s extensive discography includes music from many different periods, with particular emphasis on Polish music of the last three decades. The Quartet’s recordings have been released on more than forty CDs on labels including ECM, EMI Poland, Olympia, Chandos, Naxos, CD Accord, and Radio Katowice. Four of these won the Fryderyk Award of the Polish Phonographic Academy for Best Chamber Music Album.

In 2017 their recording of Grazyna Bacewicz’s complete string quartets (for Chandos) earned the Quartet the prestigious Gramophone Classical Music Award for the Best Chamber Music Album of the Year.
