This year begins a collaboration between MoMI’s First Look Festival and Polish documentary festival Millennium Docs Against Gravity, with Artistic Director Karol Piekarczyk presenting two selections from their Warsaw showcase and engaging in the Working on It sessions.
Part of First Look 2023
With Marek Kozakiewicz and Aleksander Szamalek in person
Silent Love (2022) by dir. Marek Kozakiewicz
Poland/Germany, 72 mins. In Polish with English subtitles. New York premiere
Thirty-five-year-old Aga starts to look after her teenage brother, Milosz, after their mother’s death. While caring for him with the dedication and responsibility of a parent, she also seeks to become his legal guardian. To do so, she must navigate both a stringent legal apparatus and the mores of her conservative community by keeping her long-term relationship with Maja secret —even from Milosz. In a film of exemplary restraint and elegant construction, director Kozakiewicz lets us witness the evolution of this modern family patiently and respectfully, allowing the audience to make realizations and take leaps alongside these three remarkable subjects.
Joanna d’Arc (2021) by dir. Aleksander Szamalek
Poland, 30 mins. North American premiere
Aneta is the manager of an erotic massage parlor in France. She left Poland to seek her own path, but things have gotten tangled up, especially with a partner who chafes at her independent spirit. With her children growing up and depending upon her less, it may be time to change things up again, and reclaim her freedom.
Tickets: $15 / $11 senior and students / $9 youth (ages 3–17) / discounted for MoMI members ($7–$11). Order tickets. Please pick up tickets at the Museum’s admissions desk upon arrival. All seating is general admission. Review safety protocols before your visit.
