The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland by decision number 51 of May 7, 2018 established the Polish Institute in Tbilisi.
The goal of the Institute’s acctivities, which began work on May 26, 2018, on the centenary of Georgia’s independence – is the comprehensive development of Polish-Georgian relations in the field of public and cultural diplomacy.
THE POLISH INSTITUTE’s AWARD of ZYGMUNTS WALISZEWSKI
On May 20, 2019, the Polish Institute’s Award of Zygmunt Waliszewski for the best Georgian visual artist.
The award winner – the Bullion performative group – was selected from among candidates proposed by independent Georgian curators: Ketevan Kintsurashvili, Vato Tsereteli, Magda Guruli, Nini Palavandishvili, Lali Pertenava and Irina Popiashvili.
The prize’s patron is the outstanding Polish painter of the interwar period, who spent his youth in Tbilisi, among the leading artists of the Georgian avangarde. In Georgia, despite the fact that almost a hundred years have passed since Waliszewski’s departure to Poland, the artist was not forgotten. Presentations of his work are regularly held (last time in 2017).
The founder of the Award is the Polish Institute in Tbilisi. The prize will be awarded every two years.
The winner received 3000 EURO and a statuette inspired by the work of Zygmunt Waliszewski, designed for this occasion by Georgian artist David Janiashvili.
The jury of the 1st edition of the Prize included: Monika Szewczyk (Galeria Arsenał in Białystok), Magda Kardasz, curator (Zachęta – National Gallery of Art), Waldemar Tatarczuk (Galeria Labirynt, Lublin), Piotr Rypson (ICOM Polska).
