About “You Have No Idea How Much I Love You”
In this Polish documentary we follow two women, mother and daughter, going through therapy. During five sessions we get to explore their emotions through their tears, their movements and mannerisms, their silence, but most of all their words.
The issues that push us to seek help from a therapist are usually a superficial reflection of deeper rooted problems, of unspeakable impulses and untold stories. The focus shifts slowly from the daughter’s “problematic behavior” to the mother’s past. The notions of love and maternal nurturing become more and more separated for the mother, although these two subjects are not easy to pull apart.
Psychological troubles are often linked to unbearable intimate stories, pieces of fiction we create unconsciously that get intertwined with reality. Here, it’s up to the audience to determine what is fiction between this mother and her daughter.
Will the mother be able to see and accept her daughter for who she is, or will her daughter remain an object she shapes through her own vision and ideas ? Which new story will these women need to create in order to accept one another as separate entities ?
The women get to untangle their stories with the help of therapist Bogdan de Barbaro, to the point where these stories are not linked to one another anymore. Perhaps it is in this distance that a new type of love will become possible.
