Composers for Peace: Kilar, Glass and Brossé Concerts by Sinfonietta Cracovia

The Sinfonietta Cracovia will present its flagship concert combining film music and concert music as part of the “Kilar 90” project commemorating the 90th birthday of Wojciech Kilar. Kilar composed music for more than 130 films, including those by Coppola, Polański, Kutz and Zanussi. The orchestra will perform under the baton of Dirk Brossé, composer and musical director of Film Fest Gent festival.

The special dimension of the Sinfonietta Krakow’s tour in Belgium is given by the presence of a peaceful message in the programme, brought by Dirk Brossé’s composition Ode an die Freude – recompositing for strings inspired by Ludwig van Beethoven’s masterpiece. The message resonates with the current war situation in Ukraine and the idea of commemorating the heroism of Polish soldiers on the ground in Belgium during World War II, as 2022 is the year of remembrance of the Three Generals: Stanisław Maczek, Stanisław Sosabowski and Władysław Anders.

In this context, a concert in the cultural centre De Spil in Roeselare, a town in Belgian Flanders liberated by the soldiers of the 1st armored division of General Stanisław Maczek, organised on the initiative of the Polish Institute in Brussels, is of particular importance. The concert is organised under the title “In homage to the Three Generals”. On the day of the Sinfonietta Cracovia concert, De Spil and the Polish Institute in Brussels will present a historical exhibition entitled “The Year of the Three Generals: Anders, Maczek, Sosabowski” at De Spil’s headquarters.

The Sinfonietta Cracovia was founded by the Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki. In 2022, it embarked on an international concert tour as an ode to the Polish classical composer Wojciech Kilar.
