Presentation of a copy of Jan Matejko’s painting of Nicolaus Copernicus at the European Parliament
On September 26, the European Parliament hosted an official presentation of a copy of Jan Matejko’s famous painting “Astronomer Copernicus or Conversation with God” painted by young Polish artist Ireneusz Rolewski.
The event was part of the celebration of the Year of Nicolaus Copernicus (to mark the 550th anniversary of the astronomer’s birth) and the celebration of the Year of Jan Matejko (to mark the 130th anniversary of the painter’s death).
The project was initiated by Muzeum Historyczne Skierniewic im. Jana Olszewskiego.
The organization of the event involved Members of Parliament: Witold Waszczykowski and Elżbieta Kruk; Ministerstwo Edukacji i Nauki; Krzysztof Jażdżyk – Prezydent Miasta Skierniewice; Fundacja ORLEN; Polska Akademia Nauk; Centrum Badań Kosmicznych PAN / Space Research Centre PAS; Akademia Kopernikańska; Polish Institute Brussels.
Arrangements are underway to donate the painting and permanently display it in the European Parliament.
