From Prose Poetry to Slam: On the Evolution of Poetic Narrative from the 19th Century to the 21st Century
We invite you to the conference FROM PROSE POETRY TO SLAM: ON THE EVOLUTION OF POETIC NARRATIVE FROM THE 19TH CENTURY TO THE 21ST CENTURY (DU POÈME EN PROSE AU SLAM : SUR L’ÉVOLUTION DU RÉCIT POÉTIQUE DU XIXe SIÈCLE AU XXIe SIÈCLE) dedicated to the evolution of poetic narrative, which, in its unique and heterogeneous form, oscillates between prose and poetry.
From Jean-Jacques Rousseau and his Rêveries d’un promeneur solitaire (1782) to Charles Baudelaire’s Spleen de Paris (1869), prose poetry as a specific genre evolves, consolidates, frees, and modernizes cultural codes. Its emergence actively participates in the innovation around the narrative itself, transforming through modern poetry, in which poetic prose and free verse will emerge as tools for the destruction of classical generic models, as well as for the construction of innovative forms. Today, poetic narrative, still very much alive, sees its boundaries pushed to the form of slam, which, in turn, not only reflects societal issues but also seizes critical tools to emphasize rebellion and commitment to cultural, sociological, and political events. The conference will focus on these research fields in Poland and the French-speaking world (Belgium, Canada, France, and Switzerland) and will be presented in Polish and French by specialists in the field. It will conclude with a slam performance by Belgian and Polish artists.
