Photography exhibition: “Song of a Lonely Traveller” by Maciej Plewiński in Villa de Bondt in Gent

The greatest formal achievement of Maciej Plewiński’s iconoclastic artistic activity is his total disregard for the niceties of form. And since form as such has of late been discarded or at best remains the ruinous phan- tom of derivative artists, so much the better. What than do Plewinski’s frozen images impart? What do they say? What is in them?

Maciej Plewiński – ‘Siena II’

“Wandering through the world, I try in various ways to capture its visible manifestations through photography—supposedly objective and believed to bear witness to its existence. I prefer to do this on film, to have a tangible proof of the event, place, and moment. I trust matter more than information…” – Maciej Plewiński

Maciej Plewiński – ‘Roma’

Maciej Plewiński was born in 1955 in Kraków, Poland. He began assisting his father, the renewed photographer Wojciech Plewiński, with assignments and darkroom work at the age of 10. He later studied printmaking at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków. In the 1980s, he worked as an assistant to Prof. Andrzej Pietsch in the Intaglio Workshop of the Academy’s Graphic Faculty, where he specialized in photogravure techniques and teaching. From 1985 to 1986, Plewiński moved to New York, where he assisted the celebrated photographer, Ryszard Horowitz. After returning to Poland in 1987, he embarked on a successful career as an independent photographer and printmaker.
