Kunstenfestivaldesarts : Ewa Dziarnowska « This resting, patience »

Ewa Dziarnowska is a Polish choreographer and dancer based in Berlin, considered one of the most striking emerging figures on the European contemporary dance scene. Her show This resting, patience has helped secure her place on the international stage. Based on careful observation of movement and relationships, this performance departs from the traditional model of dance reception. It offers an experience centered on duration and presence, rather than closed narration or dramaturgy.

This resting, patience
dance / durational performance

On the floor, a thick ultramarine blue carpet. The voice of Dionne Warwick and her song What the World Needs Now in a loop. Ewa Dziarnowska and Leah Marojević, both dressed in blue, deploy undulating movement in the space. With generosity and attention, they play with attraction, repetition, form, and emotions to choreographically explore physical desire, lack, hope, and loss. In solo or unison, they challenge each other and make contact between themselves or, at times, with the audience. The proximity of bodies breaks the audience’s passivity: the gaze becomes movement, and movement – a way of being seen, a reciprocity that disrupts classical performance. For Dziarnowska, improvisation and embodied knowledge are bulwarks against our need for rationality and linearity. Between installation and spectacle, her projects transform our consumerist gaze into a transformative encounter. Dance becomes a space that suspends time to make room for complexity, while a sensous presence build a  connection. Carried by growing virtuosity and emotional power, This resting, patience is a celebration of desire and sensuality that shows how dance can save us in dark times.

The Belgian premiere of This resting, patience is co-created in collaboration with artists closely linked to the Polish art scene, such as Krzysztof Bagiński (music) and Jacqueline Sobiszewski (lighting). In June, the performance will also premiere at the Malta Festival Poznań.

Ewa Dziarnowska is a dancer and choreographer based in Berlin. Her works, including This resting, patienceA Room With a Better View, and 4677684728466.com, explore improvisation as a method and mode of thought, focusing on relationship, rhythm and experience. She creates in real time, blending precision and spontaneity, while questioning dance production and reception norms. She has notably collaborated with Alex Baczyński-Jenkins, Michele Rizzo, Enad Marouf, and Elena Francalanci.
