Since 2018, Brussels Gallery Weekend and its galleries have been supporting young Brussels artists by hosting the “Generation Brussels” event. Organised by a different curator each year, the exhibition aims to put the spotlight on young Brussels artists who have not yet been invited by the galleries. For this year, Brussels Gallery Weekend has chosen to collaborate with Belgian curator Maud Salembier. She has collaborated with the artists on a transdisciplinary exhibition, this year based on the notion of Care.
As part of Generation Brussels, Mary Szydlowska, a choreographer and performer who lives and creates between Warsaw and Brussels, will present the performance and installation LEAKS consisting of video and mixed media works. LEAKS is an installation and performance dedicated to a range of cleaning gestures and practices, assisted by hands, objects and liquids. Tracing the global passage from everyday cleaning practices to disinfection regimes in the post-pandemic world, LEAKS is an investigation of immersive states in relation to care, space and time.
The LEAKS performance will take place three times during the event at the National Bank Printing Office :
8.09 – Thursday at 7.30 pm
10.09 – Saturday at 4pm
11.09 – Sunday at 2pm
📍 L’Imprimerie de la Banque nationale, Boulevard de Berlaimont 56, 1000 – Bruxelles
Mary Szydlowska (1993) graduated from the STUDIOS master program at the Studios de Formation aux Arts du Spectacle et à la Recherche – P.A.R.T.S. in Brussels (2021) and from Cultural Studies at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow (2018). Between 2017 and 2021, she conducted research on cleaning practices, read and executed as healing gestures. Between 2020 and 2022 she created a diptych of solo works: SOAK, which was presented at the Beursschouwburg in Brussels in March 2021, and LEAKS, which will take place as part of Generation Brussels, during the Brussels Gallery Weekend 2022.
Mary Szydlowska’s works use a variety of media to create installations in which the body moves. Szydlowska works with objects, textiles, sound and video, which, in the context of her choreographic works, expand the understanding of choreography and create multi-layered environments of co-presence with the audience. Her choreographic work focuses on peripheral and invisible phenomena related to architectural spaces and institutional environments.
