The publication of a brand new translation of the entire fictional oeuvre of Bruno SCHULZ (1892-1942) is a veritable phenomenon in the world of Francophone publishing. Until now, readers have only been able to get hold of famous writer’s exceptional work through a translation by four different translators consisting of parts of essays (1961-1974). This is what prompted Alain VAN CRUGTEN to embark on a new translation of this writer who is, unfairly, known only to a few. The book came out in January, published by the wonderful publisher L’Age d’Homme (Lausanne) and is entitled RECITS DU TREIZIEME MOIS. The publication was greeted with delight by readers of Francophone literature, as they now have the chance to rediscover an unparalleled literary world and they will also have the opportunity to hear how the project got started by attending an audience with the translator on Monday 2 March 2015 at 13:00 at the Foire du Livre de Bruxelles, when the translator will be in conversation with Richard MILLER, philosopher, former minister and editor, and founder of the Editions du CEP, which publishes the play Bruno Schulz ou La Grande Hérésie, which were also written by Alain Van Crugten

Alain Van Crugten will also be talking about his volume of short stories entitled La Rebrolution et autres histoires à demi belges and his volume of plays, Coming out (followed by 4 other plays), both of which were published by l’Age d’Homme. On this occasion, Alain Van Crugten will meet the public at the stand for Swiss editors on Saturday 28 February and Sunday 1 March in the afternoon.

Bruno SCHULZ is one of the standout Polish poets of the 20th century. A Jew by faith and of Polish nationality, Schulz published two collections of dream-like short stories which go to make a coherent whole both in terms of topics as well as the obsessions which drive him. Alain VAN CRUGTEN is a translator, novellist and playwright who was born in Brussels in 1936. After studying Germanic Languages and Literature followed by Slavonic Studies, he taught Slavonic Literature and Comparative Literature at the Université Libre de Bruxelles. Recently awarded the Prix de Phare du Nord 2013 for his French translation of La Langue de ma mère by Tom Lanoye, he began his career as a translator with the plays and prose of Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz. We also have him to thank, amongst many other things, for translations of the works of Hugo Claus, Tadeusz Różewicz and Marian Pankowski. He is also the author of the novels Principessa, Bibardu, Korsakoff, Spa si beau, Des Fleuves impassibles, Pourquoi pas moi?, and short stories: Stef et autres fictions, Personnes déplacées, not to mention many plays for the theatre.
