Brussels Research Yoga – exhibition by Janek SIMON

Polish artist Janek SIMON has been invited by Julia WIELGUS, from the artists’ collective SUPER DEALS, to participate in a residency in Brussels from 12 October until 10 November. The one month-long residency at the Super Deals became a pretext for the artist to develop an exhibition intitled BRUSSELS RESEARCH YOGA starting with a self-reflective impulse. Simon uses his own strategy – which involves visualization of scientific data and mathematical formulas – as a test group of his experiment: how does art decode, translate, manipulate and visualize research? The project opens up to questions such as the relevance of the results produced by this approach compared to purely scientific studies. Is such a working method, widely employed by contemporary artists, rather an attempt to legitimize and give importance to artistic production or can it indeed produce knowledge that could be integrated or used by other disciplines?

Janek SIMON (born 1977) is a conceptual artist, occasional curator and a wannabe documentary filmmaker based in Warsaw. He draws his inspiration from curiosity and personalised anarchism. On a more concrete level he is inspired by travel, history of science and political ideas, and the practice and ethics of the DIY culture, always filtering the theories through his personal experience. In recent years he developed a body of work investigating notions of distance and difference between places, working on projects that try to remap semi-peripheral position of Eastern Europe through geographical experiments. He had been running an ephemeral project space called Goldex Poldex in Krakow between 2008 and 2012. The space’s programme dealt with issues of autonomy and its contemporary meaning, the influence of funding bodies of artistic production and politics of presentation of marginalised positions in the art system. He started developing large scale conceptual projects that are made public through documentary films in recent years. The first one “Mission Auropol” which tells the story of a group of Polish artist working on an exhibition in an utopian community in India is in last stages of postproduction. His work was shown, among others, at Liverpool Biennale, Prague Biennale, and numerous solo shows in major public art institutions in Poland and elsewhere (Arnolfini Bristol, Casino Luxembourg, Zacheta National Gallery of Art in Warsaw and others). It’s not Janek Simon’s first visit to Belgium: in 2010, he was the guest of Bruges, at het Entrepot, where he presented his project TV Signal Manipulation Monument. He took part in the exhibition The Power of Fantasy, held at Bozar in 2011 and in the project Air de Pologne at Stombeek Cultural Centre and the Mechelen Garage in 2012.

Super Deals
Super Deals is a residence project for artists who spend a short period in Brussels in order to experiment, work on ideas or come up with new projects inspired by the dynamic atmosphere of Brussels. In exchange, the residents must organise a meeting with the public in a format of their choosing (discussion, performance, exhibition workshop, etc.).
Super Deals came into being in 2014 and is part of the Brussels network OFF-SPACE. It has established itself in Saint-Gilles, the artistic quarter of Brussels.
